This looks like an attempt to create a more bold and daring front end face..., and I love your comparisons with non-automotive machines.
But I agree that the added thick horizontal bar along, with added width, end up looking odd. Seems they were trying to fill some of the blank space adjacent to the sides of original three bar grille..., only to get carried away.
Nowadays coming up with a good looking unique grille is a real challenge, but in a way it's like putting one's best foot forward, and very important to the success of the overall body design.
Well, I guess that as pure EVs gradually take over, our discussion of grilles will end... only to be replaced with a discussion of front fascias. :-o
