Chery making breadvan.

Chery appear to be busy making ‘bread vans‘ or mini MPV’s. These little MPV’s are the bread and butter automobile of several Chinese auto companies, namely Chang’an. The little 7 seaters, or sometimes 9/10/11 seaters are a backbone of the Chinese economy, they are often used to ferry workers around, carry goods, or just simply annoy other drivers into driving at walking speeds.

The most interesting thing about this Chery breadvan, is the guy sitting inside smoking - just who is he? and secondly, why does this van look a lot like the Suzuki Landy? It could just be that the Suzuki Landy is being used as a test mule for Chery benchmarking, or it could just be a car that was highly inspired!

Karry pickup:

A while ago, Chery mentioned they wanted to get into every market niche, we didnt realize that they also meant the flatbed mini truck market, a market which is already teaming with dozens of different manufactures, ranging from the 20,000rmb marker. We dont quite understand how Chery expects to compete in this segment, but best of luck to them. The interior on this Karry model looks quite good to other manufacturers, but we doubt that the farmers that buy these sort of vehicles have much interest in asthetics, but rather price.

Eagle-eyed readers may notice that the Chery logo has gone from the Karry flatbed, and has been replaced with a simple blue ‘Karry’ oval. The reason? Chery plans to push their Karry range over into their own brand, which will be touted around third tier farmers cities, and to foreign developing markets.

From China Car Times:

Chery split off their brands into three seperate directions last year, Riich was to be its luxury brand, Reely was to be its MPV/SUV brand whilst Karry was to be the super economical brand that is being aimed at rural buyers.

The Karry brand has so far sprouted five models, four mini bread vans (You Pai, You You, You Sheng, You Ya), and a sedan box van (the You Yi), the You You (Here You being pronounced as the same as Yo!). The You You is the first to get the one liter diesel power plant that will be popular with frugal rural buyers, that 1.0L diesel engine is from Chery’s own ATECO engine and is the first time that Chery has put such a small diesel engine into mass production. Maximum power from the compact unit is 46kw (63bhp) and has a max torque of 125nm.

Now for the best part – the basic model of the 1.0L diesel Karry You You will start at just 46,900rmb – which is great for a small, powerful 8 seater vehicle, and at the same time the You You is able to receive a 10% government subsidy for rural buyers, and due to its clean emissions it will also receive a further 3000rmb subsidy from the government who are keen to promote a next generation of clean cars. Are there any reasons not to buy one?
