China sold 530,700 passenger vehicles in January, up 35.9 percent Y/Y:
February 14, 2008 - China sold a record amount of 530,700 passenger vehicles in the first month of this year, which represents a growth of 3.5 percent month-on-month and a 35.9 percent growth year-on-year, according to latest statistics from National Association of Passenger Vehicles Manufacturers.

Heavy snowstorms in January disrupted vehicle production in many regions in southern China. It must be a surprise to many people that China’s vehicle sales in January surged 35.9 percent from one year earlier.

"One the one hand, many carmakers did not transfer their stockpiles to dealers in the last month of last year and consequently dealers are under no pressure to sell their inventory this January,” explained Rao Da, secretariat of National Association of Passenger Vehicle Manufacturers.

"On the other hand, some car makers have understated their sales figures last year in order to make it look better this year,” Rao said.

Official statistics show FAW-VW leads China’s passenger vehicle sales in January by selling out 65,700 vehicles and it is followed by Shanghai-VW’s 45,000 in January. Industry insiders say FAW-VW has understated its sales numbers last year in order to hit a record target 600,000 this year.

Rao believes China’s car sales will not cease to grow until China puts oil consumption tax in place. For the time being, China has no restrictions on the imports of luxury and large displacement passenger vehicles.

China's top ten passenger vehicle makers in January 2008:
Shanghai. February 14 (Gasgoo.com) – Shanghai VW leads passenger car sales in January in China with 46,133 units sold, a figure that is just 16 units higher than its closest follower FAW VW, which sold 46,117 vehicles.

In the same month, Shanghai GM, FAW-VW, Shanghai VW all sold more than 400,000 vehicles, while FAW-Toyota, Dongfeng Nissan and Beijing Hyundai sold more than 30,000 vehicles; the other top ten automakers, including Changan Ford, Geely Auto, Guangzhou Honda and Chery Auto sold 200,000 – 240,000 vehicles.

Sales of Chinese vehicles in Russia grew 150% in 2007.

March 28, 2008 - In 2007, over 50,000 Chinese vehicles were sold in the Russian market, up 150 percent over the previous year. Chery Auto is the best seller among all the Chinese brands, the Xinhua news agency said, citing a Russian newspaper on Wednesday.

In 2007, sales of Chinese vehicles grow fast in Russia thanks to the increase in their local production capacity, said industry analyst Mr. Romanov. "They may nudge all the conventional car models of AutoVAZ out of the market after they've captured the low-end market," he predicts, adding that Chinese automakers will gain more market shares. AutoVAZ is Russia's leading domestic automaker.

Chery sold approximately 37,000 vehicles last year, an increase of 245 percent year on year. The home-grown automaker began selling cars in Russia in June 2006, and now Russia has been its largest overseas market, accounting for about 30 percent of its total overseas sales last year.

Recent foreign reports said that Chery is planning to buy an existing manufacturing plant in Russia by spending RMB 3 billion ($422.32 million), but the plan has not been officially confirmed.

Another Chinese automaker, Chongqing Lifan Group is also planning its production expansion in Russia. The automaker started its local assembly line in the Karachay-Cherkessia last summer and aims to raise its annual productivity to 50,000 units from the current level of 5,000 units.

China sells 286,804 SUVs in Jan-May.
China sold 286,804 SUVs from January to May this year, up 58.8% from the same period of last year, sources from China Passenger Car Association said yesterday.

The total sales of SUVs built in China were 199,812 units, up 47.8% from a year earlier, while sales of imported SUVs rose a remarkable 91.3% year on year to 86,994 units.

Japan is the largest contributor to the sales volume of imported SUVs, with 39,195 units sold in China, followed by South Korea and the U.S..

March was a record month as sales of imported SUV sales rose 104% to 21,510 units and domestically built SUVs rose 61% to 47,769 units. The overall sales of SUV slided afterward due to natural disasters, such as the Sichuan earthquake and southern provinces' flooding.
China's PV sales in June up 13% y/y, down1.3% m/m
There were 517,469 passenger vehicles (PVs) sold in China in June, up 13% year on year (y/y), but down 1.3% from May, said xinhuanet.com today. The PV sales in the Chinese market have dropped for three straight months, but this trend is expected to change for the better starting this month.

The latest statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) show that in the first six months of this year, the sales of passenger vehicles in the country totaled 3,322,876 units, up 14.2% over one year earlier. Industry experts from the CAAM predicted that the sluggish PV sales since April will be reversed in the second half of this year starting in July, with sales likely to grow by 10% y/y.

In June, China sold 38,098 SUVs, representing the biggest growth at 32.0% y/y; there were 369,639 sedans sold, up 11.7% y/y, but down 2.02% from the previous month; sales of MPVs (multi-purpose vehicles) hit 17,622 units, up 0.8% y/y.

China's pickup sales top 100,000 units in H1.

July 24, 2008 - The total sales of China's 10 major pickup brands reached 103,387 units in the first half of 2008, up 21.8% from one year earlier, reported xinhuanet.com today, citing the latest data from China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).

Great Wall Motor led the pickup sales with 31,399 units from January to June, capturing 30.4% market share. The second to eighth best-selling pickup brands over the period are Jiangling, Nissan, Zhongxing, Foton, Huanghai (Yellow Sea), Gonow, and Qingling.

Statistics of the CAAM show that the first-half sales of the four major auto categories -- sedans, MPVs, SUVs and pickups -- hit 3,097,220 units in the Chinese market, up 18.53% year-on-year. The sales growth rates of sedans (16.8%) and MPVs (4.8%) were both below that of pickups.

The soaring fuel price did not affect the sales of pickups in China over the past six months because they are mainly used as vehicles widely needed for business and industrial activities for China’s booming economy. The demand for pickups is expected to grow more rapidly.

The sales of pickups now only account for 3% of the sales of the four major auto categories in China, but industry experts predicted that the market share of pickups will rise to 5% in the country's auto market by 2010, and to about 10% in the next 15 to 20 years.

Many automobile manufacturersare cashing on the upcoming Olympics with various ‘Olympic Edition’ cars. China Car Times listed several of them.

Skoda Octavia: 2.0l, limited to 2008 models.
The Skoda Octavia Olympic Edition is limited to a mere 2008 models and is sure to sell out fast. Its a well packed car, at a low price of 129,000rmb for which you get the VW quality we all know and love, at a bargain price. In addition to the 2.0l model, Skoda are also planning to offer a 1.6l model but both are limited to manual transmissions. Shanghai VW are also offering a 4000 gift bag with every Olympic Edition Octavia.

MG7 Olympic Edition
The MG7 Olympic Edition is so limited, that the metropolis of Beijing will only get ten cars for sale, and at 160,960rmb for the 1.8 non turbo model, its quite a bargain - if you can buy one.

FAW VW Sagitar
It well be the VW Jetta in other markets, but for China, the Sagitar is what works best and now they’ve made an Olympic version to improve sales. They’re not cheap though, at 170,888rmb to 190,080rmb for the 1.8TSI model

Volvo S40 Commemoration edition
The Volvo S40 usually retails for around 280,000rmb, but the Commemoration Edition model will retail for around 250,000rmb, the S40 packs a 2.4l engine into its small Ford Focus sized body which makes for quite a sporty car.

Suzuki SX4
As mentioned on CCT previously, the SX4 has been given a slight make over for the 08 Olympics, which will no doubt increase sales through 08. Priced at 111,118rmb to 120,180rmb, depending on transmission required. If you want one, you better move quick, as this SX4 is a limited edition model and will sell out quick. Oddly, this edition of the SX4 only comes in black.

Roewe 750 Olympic Edition
SAIC, not wanting to miss out on the Olympic fever, have launched their own Olympic Roewe 750. This Roewe 750 is a 2.5l V6 model but missing front fog lights, heated seats, but has added a rear windscreen wiper, an alarm system. From what we’ve heard, the Olympic Edition will sell for 200,888rmb.

Suzuki Swift 1.5l Olympic Edition
The Suzuki Swift is a popular car in the PRC, probably due to a mixture of cool design and low price that makes the aging Swift move off the dealership forecourt 4 years after it was launched. The Olympic Edition has seen the addition of a 6 CD playing stereo, 6 airbags, reversing sensors, automatic air conditioning, and keyless locks, not forgetting the 1.5l engine. The price is a mere 80,180 to 90,980rmb.

Toyota Royal Crown 2.5l and 3.0l
The Oylmpic Crown has been given an additional DVD+Sat navigation system to boost sales. The price sits at 320,000rmb for the 2.5l model which includes leather seats.

Mitsubishi Galant
The Galant is not an extremely well selling car in China, but the addition of GPS Sat Nav and DVD may help the Galant shift a few more from SouEast motors garages, the Olympic Galant will cost 230,980rmb.
