Beijing's vehicle population up 13% in first quarter

With 1,300 vehicles coming onto the roads each day, Beijing has seen 120,000 cars added in the first three months of the year, the municipal Traffic Management Bureau said on Wednesday.

The new vehicles added in the first quarter is 13.34 percent more than in the same period of last year. About 81 percent of the new cars are privately owned.

With the auto population explosion, license plates starting with "L" will run out this month and the next set issued will start with "M". In Beijing, all plates begin with a letter of the English alphabet, running in order.

By opening day of the Olympics in August, there are expected to be 3.35 million vehicles on the road, of which 2 million will be cars. Some of the vehicles will have to stay off the roads at times during the games, and the owners will get compensation, said an official with the municipal government. The details of the plan are still being worked out.

Private cars will have to stay home every other day under an even-odd license plate numbering system. Taxis, buses and emergency vehicles will be exempt. Half of the many government vehicles in the city will also be off the road at any one time, but it is not known how many vehicles will be affected.

The ban is aimed at ensuring air quality during the sports event. The capital tested a traffic ban from August 17-20, removing 1.3 million or one third of the automobiles from its streets. According to an earlier report, this "dry run" reduced exhaust emissions by 40 percent each day.

Air quality also apparently improved during the four-day trial, with the pollution index standing between 93 and 95, down from 116 on the day prior to the test began. A level of 116 means that visibility would be significantly impaired.

Several cities, including Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai, have considered congestion fees in recent years.

The capital of the eastern province of Jiangsu, Nanjing, is considering a peak-period congestion charge for vehicles. There are no plans for such a charge in Beijing in time for the Olympics.

Of course......
I should have known that Zotye decided to keep the "New Dadi" brand name and apply to its Daihatsu-based "Zotye 2008" SUV model.
After having acquired Xindadi, and taken its logo to replace its own, Zotye is producing this model in the old Xindadi Chengdu plant.

Betcha that this upstart's success in outselling the Tiggo has gotten Chery's attention. But on the other hand, it seems to have escaped the eye of the press.

There I go talking to myself again...........

On 3/12 Martin posts:

China’s top five SUV and MPV makers in February.

Top five SUV makers sold a total of 17,500 SUV vehicles in February, which represents 62 percent of Chinese SUV market.

Quote:
Rank / SUV brands / Automaker / February sales
1. / Hover / Great Wall / 4,584
2. / Honda CRV / Dongfeng Honda / 4,545
3. / Hyundai Tucson / Beijing Hyundai / 3,316
4. / New-Dadi / Chengdu New Dadi / 2,545
5. / Chery Tiggo / Chery Auto /2,487

============================================

On 3/13 dragin asks:

Can someone tell us about the New Dadi SUV of Chengdu shown in these February numbers?

This is a model that CAAM tells us is outselling the coveted Chery Tiggo, but I don't think it can be found anywhere on this forum.

I have attached a couple of photos of models that were once sold by New Dadi (Xindadi 新大地). But I find it hard to believe that these are related to these CAAM chart numbers.

Thanks for your help.

China is world's 3rd largest motor producer in 2007

2008-04-06

China's output of motor vehicles ranked the third in the world after Japan and the United States in 2007, according to statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).

The top ten producers, which also included Germany, the Republic of Korea, France, Brazil, Spain, Canada and India, rolled out 55.3 million motor vehicles, accounting for 76 percent of the world's total production of 73.1 million.

In 2007, the global output of passenger vehicles --including sedans, sport utility vehicles and minivans -- rose 6.1 percent to 53 million while that of commercial vehicles, including trucks and buses, rose 3.7 percent to 20 million.

China's automakers produced 8.88 million motor vehicles last year, up 22.02 percent from a year earlier, with 6.38 million of passenger vehicles and 2.5 million commerical vehicles, according to CAAM figures.

Total vehicle sales jumped 21.84 percent year-on-year to 8.79 million units in the world's second largest car market after the US, twice the figure in 2003.

Dong Yang, CAAM vice chairman, said China's auto industry had made impressive progress in developing independently owned brands. He added indigenous models accounted for more than 95 percent of commercial vehicles and 40 percent of passenger vehicles on the domestic market.

Sales of sedans reached 4.73 million units, or 53.76 percent of the total vehicle sales. About 1.24 million were indigenous models such as Xiali and Chery QQ.

China imports more motor vehicles in 1st two months
(Xinhua)
Updated: 2008-05-02 14:54

China's motor vehicle imports soared sharply on strong demand at home in the first two months of this year, sources with the General Administration of Customs said on Friday.

From January to February, China imported 62,000 motor vehicles for $2.26 billion, up 82.6 percent and 93.4 percent, respectively, on the same period of last year. The growth rates were 63.9 percentage points and 80.8 percentage points higher, respectively.

In February alone, the imports were 33,000 vehicles, up 130 percent, the highest growth rate since January 2007.

Foreign-funded companies accounted for 67.4 percent, or 42,000 vehicles, of the country's total imports in the first two months, up 70 percent. Among them, wholly-owned foreign firms imported 35,000 vehicles, up 96.5 percent. Their share in arrivals nationwide went up to 56.8 percent from 52.8 percent a year earlier.

Off-road vehicles made up for 50 percent, or 31,000 units, of the total imports, up 140 percent, while cars accounted for 39.6 percent, or 25,000 units, up 45.6 percent.

Japan surpassed the European Union to become the biggest supplier of motor vehicles to China, with a sales volume of 24,000 vehicles, up 130 percent. The EU exported 21,000 vehicles to China, up 59.3 percent.

China's passenger car sales slow down in April

From:Shanghai DailyMay 10, 2008

CHINA'S passenger car sales rose 10.83 percent in April, the slowest pace over the past five months, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) said yesterday.

The weaker market demand has re-triggered market speculation of a possible slowdown on the world's second largest auto market this year that may fail to meet its full year expectation.

Domestic car makers sold a combined 604,900 cars, sport utility vehicles (SUVs), multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) and minibuses last month, the association said in a statement. Sales in March rose 23.55 percent, the biggest increase in seven months.

"Slow sales growth in April is unusual," said Li Chunbo, an auto analyst from Citic Securities Co Ltd.

"The purchase desire could be possibly dampened because of people's lower income from the tamed stock market and real estate sector."

Car sales rose 7.96 percent to 444,600 units last month while SUV models emerged as a strong boost for the total with an year-on-year growth of 38.12 percent to 39,500 units.

Auto makers delivered 100,000 minibuses during the same period, an increase of 18 percent from a year earlier. MPV sales dropped 1.13 percent.

For the first four months, passenger car sales rose 17.8 percent to 2.46 million, CAAM said in the same auto report, adding the growth was 2.87 percentage points slower than the same period of last year.

Passenger car sales climbed 21.68 percent for past year to 6.29 million, lagging behind the 25.4-percent increase for 2006 from the 2005 level.

CAAM Vice Chairman Dong Yang said earlier that the segment would remain at a double-digit rate to hit 7.3 million units this year.

"The sales growth may be further shrunk to 18 percent this year," Li said.

FAW Volkswagen ranked first in the top 10 car makers with sales of 47,984 units in April, followed by Shanghai VW and Shanghai GM.

Beijing Hyundai moved up in its position from 12 to 6 last month after launching a revamped Elantra, which sold 11,023 units. The car maker sold a combined 298,300 units, representing 67 percent of the total.

Vehicle sales post slow rise as demand curbed

By Irene Shen 2008-5-13

CHINA'S vehicle sales rose 14 percent in April, the slowest pace in almost two years, as a combination of inflation and a slumping stock market curbed demand for passenger cars.

Sales of passenger cars and commercial vehicles rose to 922,600 in April, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said in an e-mailed statement yesterday. Vehicle sales grew at a rate of 21 percent in the first three months of the year.

China's inflation rate is running near an 11-year high forcing people to pay more for food and other daily necessities. The nation's falling stock market also helped curb demand for luxuries including automobiles, Bloomberg News said.

"There're fundamental changes in people's buying sentiment," said Yale Zhang, director of CSM Asia in Shanghai. "People are really concerned about economic uncertainty."

Consumer prices rose 8.5 percent in April from a year earlier, the National Bureau of Statistics said yesterday, after gaining 8.3 percent in March. People's Bank of China Governor Zhou Xiaochuan said on May 5 that there's a possibility interest rates will rise. The benchmark one-year lending rate is at a nine-year high of 7.47 percent after six increases last year.

Vehicle output rose 20 percent to 981,300 units last month. In first four months, output rose 16 percent to 3.5 million vehicles, while sales added 19 percent to 3.5 million vehicles.

Passenger car sales rose 11 percent last month, also the slowest pace since July, 2006. Sales of commercial vehicles including buses and trucks rose 21 percent to 317,700 units in April.

Car sales rose 22 percent last year, helped by the nation's benchmark stock index, the CSI 300, more than doubling. At least three-fifths of Chinese stock-market investors use their profits to buy new cars, the auto makers' group said last year.

General Motors Corp, Toyota Motor Corp and other overseas car makers are banking on China and other emerging markets to offset slower demand in the United States, the world's largest auto market.

GM, the biggest overseas auto maker in China, will boost annual sales in the country by about half over the next three years to 500,000 vehicles, it said last month.

Toyota, the world's No. 2 car maker, aims to raise China sales 36 percent to 640,000 vehicles in the year ending March 2009.

If the new Joyear is truly in the 4th place among MPVs it would be a surprise. Such a meteoric rise for a newly introduced model is unusual. I think rather that CAAM is confusing this MPV with the Dongfeng Liuqi Future, which they listed in this No. 4 spot previously.

Hey how about that Refine....JAC hit a home run when they picked Hyundai to team up with on that one.....
