first distribution centre for Chinese vehicles has been launched. Motorcenter's East Africa chief executive officer, Joseph Ssemuwemba, said in the short-term, they would set up a network of service centres.

"In the long-term, we want to set up a vehicle assembly plant," he said during the launch at the Shoprite parking grounds in Kampala.

"Today, we are unveiling the Grand Tiger Pick-up and Landmark Station Wagon models that have already been introduced in countries like the US, where they have passed the stringent Nevada test for performance."

"The cars have alternative diesel or petrol engines. The consumption at 13.7km per litre is better than most cars. They also have electronic braking systems that are unusual."

Zhongxing's ventures

Ash, by Chinese vehicles I think you are talking here about Hebei Zhongxing Auto Group's pickup and an SUV. I believe they have already initiated plans for CKD assembly plants in Russia, Eygpt, Turkey and Vietnam.

CHAMCO the importer that they chose to represent them in the U.S., is now saying they will not be introduced for sale until summer of 2008.

However they have been showing the vehicles at various shows as they seek to recruit dealers.

It's not going to be easy since Zhongxing is a small scale manufacturer and CHAMCO has no previous auto or auto importing experience.
