Dealer networks in China?

Hi everyone. This is my first post. I'm in Los Angeles, but I am very interested in China's auto industry.

This may be a rudimentary question, but how are new cars sold in China?

Do the manufacturers have dealer networks that have exclusive rights to sell their cars?

Are the dealerships franchises, or are they company-owned?

Are there any laws that specifically limit the manner in which cars may be sold, or has the sales method developed more-or-less organically?

Any insight would be much appreciated!
