I must confess that so far there is not a Chinese car that can compete with this rocketship....

the slightly worried looking bloke in the passenger seat is me by the way. in the video session the car was lapping at around 1 min 22 if I remember rightly. after I got out he put in some 1 :18's, I think I need to buy a more lightweight camcorder or something!

It must have been an exhilarating ride, but I have a few questions to ask you:
1. What version of the Evolution did you ride in? check these out

http://www.topgear.com/CarServlet?e...sp&err=/jsp.error.html&mCode=null&rCode=null2
2. Isn't the 1997 cc engine used in the EVO, without the turbo chargers and intercooler, the same engine used by many Chinese cars?
3. Do you think that at this present moment a Chinese car could be modified to perform on the same level?
4. Could the ACTECO engines, Chery bought brom AVL compete on the same level?

is the dude driving the evo the one who drove the ferrari in your other vid?
different guy. this guy has run laps in the 1 min 17's, apparently the lap record for a road car is held by a red F430 which is also around 1 min 17, it would be interesting to see how they compare against each other - the ferrari should be faster in the straights and the faster bends, but the evo's 4 wheel drive may help out putting power down on the many tight bends in this twisty circuit.

The evo is an Evo 7, I think it's about a 2002 model. Not heavily modified, I think the boost is increased slightly (1.2 bar).

The base engine is, I believe, the 4G63 which is produced in shenyang mitsubishi and used in chery oriental son, brilliance zhonghua/ junjie and several other chinese cars. I think it should be quite feasible to make a mild turbo conversion, although to increase power output to the level of the Evo would probably require different engine internals such as piston, rods, bearings.

I think it should be possible to install such an engine in the Lioncell which is the same CHASSIS as the Evo.

The big difference is that it would be a lot of work to create a 4 wheel drive version.

In terms of power, the evo has around 300hp. Taking a 2.0 non turbo engine and turbocharging it has often been done, but to make 300 hp would almost certainly require changing the engine internals, especially the pistons. 200hp is probably a sensible level.

But it should be highly possible to create a chinese 'fast' car. Quite a few people have built turbo versions of the lioncell using the standard 1600cc engine in shanghai, and there is a black one which has made lap times of around 1 min 20 which is pretty fast.

Chery Acteco should be a very viable engine for delivering high performance. Also Brilliance's new engine range which will go into production soon. The best bet in either case would be to start with the turbo version. I don't know how easy it would be to persuade them to sell you just an engine, worth a try!

If you're in shanghai and you are thinking of doing something like this, the man I would point you to is [email protected] , also known on chinacarforums as 'the alchemist'. He'll have a go at anything, as proof here is a clip of him driving a 1980's nissan sideways at Tianma to please the onlookers. Sorry he is somewhat obscured by the white honda:

it sounds like a good idea, but riding in the evo reminded me there are other things to do - I now have two Esprits sat waiting in England, the new acquisition being an S4 with about 275 horsepower (and that's just the start of it.........)
