That's hard luck for FAW. But there were precedents set as Geely, Chery (in its Chrysler tie-up), and Zhongxing have all canceled plans to enter Mexico. Only Chang'an which plans production by late 2009 or early 2010, remains a possible player there.

FAW and Grupo Salinas even hired a high profile CEO, Kathleen Ligocki, former CEO of Ford Mexico, to steer the venture.

As for the quality problems, one report said 900 of the first 1,000 imported, broke down within 6 months. Yet this doesn't square with the kind of high marks that FAW Xiali has gotten from J.D. Power in its China-based surveys.

Penetrating the border into the U.S. is becoming even more difficult for car makers with high hopes.
