Geely plan for plant in Philippines

Chinese car maker Geely Group Co Ltd yesterday said it plans to launch an assembly plant in the north Philippines’ Subic Bay Freeport Zone, for the production of its affordable Geely cars.

The company, through its local unit Geely Cars Philippines, said 2,000 units of its hatchback and sedan models will be shipped through Subic, for dealers and customers in Metro Manila and other places nearby, Philippines television network ABS-CBN News reported yesterday.

The cars, priced at US$9,140 for the 1.1-liter MR hatchback, and US$11,570 for the 1.3-liter CK sedan, will be brought to the Subic distribution hub tax-paid, just like the car imports of mainstream distributors.

The firm plans to eventually open 12 dealerships in the country by next year. Apart from this, it is also planning a separate assembly plant in Subic for its semi-knock down units to take advantage of the incentives being offered by the freeport zone.

Geely cars to go on sale in Turkey by August.

May 28, 2008 - Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd, the listed unit of China's largest privately owned car maker, will begin to sell vehicles in Turkey later this year, an industrial website reported recently.

Turkey's Anadolu Group will act as the local distributor for Geely. The vehicle, which is forecast to be available for sale in August, will have a price tag of YTL 16,000 ($12,800).

Besides Geely, Anadolu Group is also the sales agency for Isuzu, Kia, AvtoVAZ and South Korea's LS Industrial Co. Another Chinese homegrown automaker Chery already entered the Turkish market last year with Mermerler Group.

Turkey is gradually growing as an export base for automotive manufacturers and auto-related sub-industries for its strategic market location, low cost, tax breaks, abundance of skilled labor, customs union with the EU and high technology and know-how.

As of today, Turkey is the world's 17th-largest auto manufacturer. Its automotive production plants have a combined annual production capacity of 1.5 million vehicles. It is the European Union's leading manufacturer of passenger buses and third in trucks and commercial vehicles.

China's Geely Has Global Auto Ambitions

July 17, 2008

With the automaker's winning affordable-car formula under pressure at home, Chairman Li is pushing hard for a breakthrough on the world stage

As a boy growing up in rural China, Li Shufu was fascinated by cars. The son of rice farmers in the southeastern province of Zhejiang, Li started making model autos when he was only 8 years old. "I used mud to make cars and tires, big ones," says Li, 44. That boyhood hobby paid off well for Li, who grew up to become the founder and chairman of one of the most important automakers in China, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group.

Now Li has an even loftier goal: Transform Geely into a force in the auto industry, not just in China but worldwide. With gasoline well over $4 a gallon in the U.S., he figures the timing may be right for American consumers to consider inexpensive, fuel-efficient Chinese-made names like Geely. While Detroit giants like General Motors (GM) are losing billions of dollars, slashing jobs, and shutting factories, Geely is taking advantage of solid growth in its home market, the world's second-largest, to expand into new markets. Last month, for instance, Li announced tentative plans to open a $500 million plant in Mexico to produce vehicles for the U.S. and Latin America.

Not bad for a company that is only a dozen years old. While a teenager, Li heeded Deng Xiaoping's call to help reform the country by opening a photo shop with his brothers in his hometown of Taizhou, Zhejiang. He went into the refrigerator components business in 1984, began manufacturing wall- and floor-boarding materials a few years later, and in 1994 started making motorcycles. In 1998, Li produced his first car, the Geely HQ hatchback, a hit that keeps selling.

A Changing Chinese Car Market
Li's company has succeeded largely by keeping costs down and offering the most affordable cars in China. For instance, Geely's best-selling four-door sedan, the Free Cruiser, retails from $6,300 to $6,900. Last year, Geely sold 217,000 passenger cars in China, making it the No. 2 domestic producer with a 4.1% market share. The biggest Chinese automaker is state-affiliated Chery, which last year held a 7.1% market stake (BusinessWeek.com, 7/11/08). That compares to GM's 10.1% share of the passenger market and Volkswagen's 17.5%.

Geely's winning formula is under strain at home, though. Chinese car buyers are becoming wealthier, making higher-end models more practical for many consumers. At the same time, brands such as the Chevrolet Spark, Volkswagen (VOWG.DE) Golf, and Hyundai Elantra are pressing Geely at the low end. The company's unit sales rose only 6% last year, vs. 21% for passenger vehicles overall.

Confronted by tougher competition in China, Li isn't sitting still. He plans to roll out an additional 15 models, including a hybrid, by 2010. Along with his plans to open the overseas manufacturing plant in Mexico, Geely has assembly operations in Indonesia, Russia, and Ukraine. And things already are looking up for the company, with sales surging 27.2% to 107,000 cars in the first half of the year (faster than the overall sedan market, which is up 16.7%), driven in part by exports of the Free Cruiser as well as the Geely KingKong ($7,500-$10,100), a four-door 1.5- to 1.8-liter sedan, and Vision ($9,700-$15,300), a 1.8-liter four-door sedan.

Lofty Sales Goal
Li also has pushed for a reorganization of the company. On July 1, the Shanghai-listed subsidiary acquired five operating associates from the privately held parent company. That should allow the publicly traded part of the group to consolidate numbers in its financial results, better reflecting Geely's overall business. "The acquisition should significantly enhance the group's corporate structure," a spokesman said in a statement, "thus resulting in a more streamlined operation with much improved operating efficiency and much better transparency."

Restructuring at home might help, but cracking the American market will be a vastly longer-term project. Chinese automakers don't have much of a track record selling in the U.S., and even the likes of Toyota (TM), Honda (HMC) and Hyundai struggled at first to win over skeptical American consumers. Still, Li intends to sell 2 million cars by 2015, and he's confident he can thrive against global competition. "Geely's technology, quality, and service are not that different from Toyota, Honda, GM, or Ford," he boasts, "but the price of our cars is 50% cheaper."

mememe-we need more comparative data to decide if the statement of Geely's strength of quality holds up against Honda, Toyota and Ford and GM. Right now they might hold up against someone like Chrysler, but even that is in question, really, until we learn more about the Geely automotive product. But, I am totally in agreement to the idea of bringing Chinese cars to the U.S. Bring 'em on!

I mean, for instance, if a small Geely 4-door sedan would cost an American consumer around $8,000 intead of a Toyota Yaris 4-door sedan for $15,000-$16,0000, Americans would have to take notice of that. And if Geely can produce solid evidence of a good safety rating and score, so much the better for their brand. Reliability and value for the price paid is really key here.

September 8, 2008 - Chinese privately owned carmaker Geely Auto will see its first batch of 500 sedans go on sale in Turkey in October, said xinhuanet.com today citing a Geely dealer in the country.

The Turkish dealer under Anadolu Group Co, one of the famous companies in Turkey, said that his company has opened 20 Geely 4S stores nationwide and has built an extensive after-sales service network. The Chinese-made Geely cars are of high quality and low price and have huge market potentials in Turkey. The sales of Geely cars, priced at 16,000 New Lira ($12,800) or more, are expected to reach 5,000 units in Turkey in 2009.

Geely Auto is the second independent Chinese carmaker after Chery Auto to sell vehicles in the Turkish market. The Geely sedans to be sold in Thurkey later this year are the low-emission KingKong and Freedom Cruiser models.

Anadolu Group's dealer of Geely cars, also the Turkish agent of Isuzu, Kia, LAD and the Korean LS tractor, has obtained the power of attorney of Geely Auto, and has gotten its government's licenses for selling Geely vehicles and providing their after-sales services.

Another homegrown Chinese automaker Chery already entered the Turkish market last year with Mermerler Group, selling the brand QQ-car for 12,000 New Lira.

Chinese Geely enters Europe via Turkey

Thursday, November 6, 2008

Distribution of Geely, the second Chinese automobile brand to enter the Turkish market, is about to begin.

Chery was the first Chinese automobile to enter Turkey with the Mermerler Group, which lead the way for others. Now, as of mid-November, Turkey's Anadolu Group is planning to launch the distribution of Geely, the first independent automobile manufacturer in the People's Republic of China, which started production 10 years ago.

Turkey will be an important contributor towards Geely's target of becoming a global giant, said Shufu Li, founder of the firm. “We are stepping into Europe via the Turkish market. We will learn a lot about the European market from Turkey and our distributor, the Anadolu Group,” he said.

“We will develop our European strategy based on Geely's development in Turkey, which has the same standards as Europe. Should the Anadolu Group also approve, we would like to expand together into other European markets.”

Li noted that Turkey would be the priority candidate for the firm if production demand emerges in Europe.

The Anadolu Group's subsidiary Anadolu Araçlar & Ticaret will begin selling two models of Geely in mid-November. The company, which will sell the brand at 25 outlets nationwide, will add five new stores in 2009, said Kamil Eser, chairman of the automotive group at Anadolu Holding.

The firm has changed the names of the models they will be exporting to Turkey, he said. “In Turkey, we will import the CK model under the name of Echo, and MK as Familia. The price of Echo in the B segment will start from $10,000.”

“We are targeting people for whom it would normally be difficult to purchase new cars. We have invested in Geely's future. It is not very important for us to make profits for the time being. Based on developments in the first year, we may reach a sale figure of between 3,000 - 5,000 units. We expect a market share of 1 percent to 1.5 percent.”

Geely, which ranks as the eight top-selling company in China, aims to enter the top three soon, Li said. The firm plans to increase its annual car production capacity from 300,000 units to 2 million units within the upcoming seven years, he said, and added,

“We will increase the number of our factories from six to nine by 2012.” The firm aims to invest $15 billion within seven years.

Geely, which currently features five models, will gradually add new models, Li said, noting that “the market will have 42 models by 2015.” Besides its existing categories, the firm also plans to add new segments, such as MPV, a mid-size sedan, SUV, Minivan, luxurious sedan, he added.

“We would like to be a global brand just like Toyota. We will make the products at locations close to the market, and develop our models and technology in line with demand. We will produce many models at a low cost, just like Toyota.”

Li believed that the global crisis may create opportunities for Chinese firms. “While global giants are losing blood, we are able to control the situation. The crisis may create an opportunity for China. We would like to have a voice in global markets by producing cheap, quality and high technology vehicles. We do not want to purchase international brands that face distress in this climate.”
