The CK model exceeds the standards of evidence of a collision of ESCOs in Europe and USA. In fact this is the first time that a vehicle of Chinese origin in compliance with such evidence in the U.S..
Contrary to the clip seen above from http://www.autocosmos.cl/noticias/expand.asp?id=17962, I don't believe the old rehashed Xiali Charade platform under the CK, and the MK, comes anywhere near meeting "collision" compliance standards in the U.S..
I think we can only expect that from Geely's new platforms.

If that is the case then I am not surprised, so far many people from different countries complain about Geely's cars.

Geely to assemble MK-2, CK-2 sedans in Ukrain

April 08, 2009

Shanghai, April 8 (Gasgoo.com) Geely Auto, a Chinese-brand carmaker based in Zhejiang province, plans to assemble MK-2 and CK-2 sedans at Ukrain starting this July.

The two Geely car models will be produced at Kremenchugsky Avtosborochny Zavod (KrASZ), the Ukrainian assembler of AvtoVAZ, Ssangyong Motor Co and China's First Auto Works Group Corp (FAW Group).

KrASZ's General Manager Nikolay Chernysh says the auto maker is testing the two car models currently and will start the assembly of the cars by July.

KrASZ started to assemble Geely CK sedans from semi-knocked-down kits sourced from China back in 2007.

Geely ranks as the second best-selling brand in Ukraine after selling 1,437 units this January. The top selling car at Ukrainian market is Lada brand from Russia's AvtoVAZ.

Geely aims to retake Singapore auto sales.

China automotive Geely Singapore exclusive distributor Exklusiv Auto told Nanyang100.com that it believes Geely has the potential to regain leadership in the economic cars segment sales in Singapore although currently under assaults from Korean and other China brand cars.

“Singapore automotive market is one of the most competitive in the world. Although there is only 4 million over population, almost all major brands of automotives are sold here” said Mr Kevin Lee, Market Manager for Exklusiv Auto in a recent exclusive interview with Nanyang100.com.

Lee: "Three year ago, the number of European cars sales dropped to just 15% of total Singapore car sales which Mercedez and BMW occupied 10%. We observed this trend and anticipated that European cars sales in Singapore will get smaller. We begin to consider stopping the sales of Rover and replace with an Asian brand. Geely was one of the brands we considered seriously.”

Exklusiv Auto was the official importer and distributor of Rover cars in Singapore before they decided to drop the dealership.

Lee reviewed that the decision to take on China made cars; an unknown brand here then, was done after reviewing historically how Japanese and Korean cars enter the Singapore market.

“(Just like Japanese and Korean cars), China cars will soon be able to compete head-on with other established brands” said Lee.

According to Lee, the positive market acceptance for China made cars was a surprise to them. They managed to sell more than 500 cars in the first year.

Based on Nanyang100 research, total China made cars sold in Singapore for that year was more than 1,000 vehicles.

“There exists a demand for economic car in Singapore. People just want to get from point A to point B. They need a transport and not a luxury car. Geely fit nicely to address this need” said Lee.

The entry of Geely into the local market has captured market attention, in particularly the Korean cars. With the weak Korean won and desire to compete for this segment of the market, prices for Korean cars dropped more than 20% in February this year resulting in the doubling of Korean cars sales from 500 units to more than 1500 units for February.

Because of low pricing and other factors, Geely car sales for second half of 2008 was reduced by half, “said Lee.

Beside the issue of pricing, Geely cars also suffered from lack of local climatisation. The car was not customized for our local condition leading to issues and bad publicity.”

"Quality issues with other China made products, such as the recent tainted milk also affect our sales,” said Lee.

In this regards, Lee said that Exklusiv Auto has been working closely with its principle Geely Auto to address some of the short comings. Additional marketing and spare parts support have been allocated.

Lee estimates that there are around 430,000 households with children and have a combined income of $2K to $6K that are yet to own a car. This is still a sizeable market for car sales.

With the right strategy, Lee believes Geely should be able to regain market leadership irrespectively of the Global financial crisis.

"We wants to exceed 2008 sales” said Lee.

Geely might be entering the Australian market soon. Ony rumours though, but if they do decide to enter, I suggest they should bring in the newer models they have rather than try and use older copycat models that everyone didn't want.
Maybe we might get them here in New Zealand as well. They say that the first model to be launched is the Panda, which is currently undergoing safety tests and has now got six airbags.

Geely holding talks with Magna over possible Opel
From China Car Times:
Geely is fast becoming a rising star on the international stage with talks of it buying out Volvo from Ford, and now Geely is holding talks with Magna on entering in on any potential Opel bid.

Magna is ready to sign a deal with GM which will make them a majority stake owner in the European brand, GM will remain a minority stake, the deal is set to be signed next month according to reports.

A Geely stake in a Magna controlled Opel is likely to be a minority one, and would unlikely give it access to the technology that it craves to become a world car maker.

A comment from Geely executives has yet to be reached, but they recently denied that they are preparing a bid for Ford’s Volvo brand.

Lada spots rival Geely in rear-view mirror - in Cuba

Chinese cars make some headway, but Cubans say Lada's no pushover.

After three decades as the favoured car of Cuban nomenklatura, the austere, Russian-built Lada has spotted a Chinese rival in its rear-view mirror.

Ministers, communist officials and police are switching their Ladas, with its stiff manual steering, for the smooth hydraulics of the Chinese-made Geely CK, a modern sedan that symbolises the island's new alliance with Beijing.

China, now Cuba's second-largest trading partner behind only Venezuela, has shown an ability to quickly penetrate and dominate markets around the world with many of its products.

But Cubans say their love for Ladas, which are probably the most visible legacy of the country's Cold War alliance with the Soviet Union, will keep the cars on Cuban roads.

'I do not think it will be easy to displace the Lada,' said David Pena, a 39-year old mechanic who recently founded Cuba's Russian Automobile Club. 'For us this car is like a family member.' Cuba is well known for the vintage American cars that prowl its streets, relics of pre-revolutionary Cuba and rolling tributes to the islanders' mechanical inventiveness.

But the truth is they are greatly outnumbered by Ladas, of which there are an estimated 100,000 in Cuba, compared to somewhere around 60,000 of the old US cars.

The Geelys, based on a Daewoo design and powered by a 1.5-litre engine licensed from Toyota Motor Corp, have begun showing up with increasing frequency on Havana streets.

They have a sleek and stylish look and come with air conditioning, electric windows and CD players.

The Chinese cars are so far showing up in very limited numbers, as government vehicles and rental cars, but their ranks are expected to increase in a sign of China's growing economic relationship with Cuba and business interests on the island.

Geely, China's biggest privately owned car maker whose worldwide strategy has been founded on exporting low-cost vehicles, shipped more than 1,500 cars to Cuba this year through June, the Miami Herald reported on its website.

But the no-frills Lada, based on the Fiat 124 from the 1960s, has become a cult object in Cuba for both its utility and its enduring presence.

Pena and dozens of other Lada die-hards gather every month in Lenin Park on the outskirts of Havana to talk about and show off their cars.

The Soviet Union took Cuba under its wing in 1961, two years after Fidel Castro rose to power in a 1959 revolution, and until its implosion in 1991 showered the communist-led island with billions of dollars in subsidies and goods, including the Lada.

From the time it arrived in the 1970s, the car, so spartan it does not even have hubcaps, was a good fit for economically challenged Cuba.

It was inexpensive, and earned a reputation as a durable car that, when repairs were needed, was easy to repair.

'Anyone can fix it with just a piece of wire,' said Carlos, a veteran mechanic in Havana. 'If you ask a Cuban he will tell you he does not want to exchange his Lada for anything in the world.' There are those who doubt that the new Geelys, flashier but not imbued with the Lada's image of tank-like solidity, will last as long on Cuba's pot-holed streets.

'They are changing (our Ladas for Geelys) but I don't think the Chinese cars will be as resistant as the Lada,' said a police officer leaning against his white Lada patrol car along Havana's sea wall. 'Only time will tell.' Cars tend to be cherished in countries where they are not easy to get, which is the case in Cuba.

A government minister must give approval for someone to buy a car legally, and in most cases even when it is purchased, it still belongs to the state.

Only people who bought a car before the revolution or those who afterward were granted the right to purchase one for personal or political achievements actually own their vehicles.

For those who get permission, a new, basic Lada can be bought for the equivalent of about US$5,000. A black market exists, where the purchaser buys the car for about three times the normal price, but it remains registered in the name of the original owner.

Cubans show their love for Ladas by making them a showcase for creativity.

Some have covered their dashboards with precious woods, installed powerful engines with souped-up carburettors or even reinvented the original Soviet design by welding together two cars to build an improbable Lada limo.

'Our wives often complain because we dedicate so much time and money to our Ladas,' said Manuel Ares, who is vice-president of the Russian Automobile Club.

The cars on Cuban streets reflect Cuba's political history, with the long Soviet presence, a lingering American influence and, currently, growing ties with China.

Russia and Cuba have been warming their old friendship, which may soon show up on Cuban roads.

Russia has talked about building a Lada plant in Cuba to sell cars throughout Latin America, but the project has been put on hold by the global recession.

In the meantime, there are plans to import thousands of new Ladas to Cuba, the Russians have said.

For Carlos the mechanic, that only confirms what he already believes.

'The Lada will never die (in Cuba),' he said, 'It has become a classic.' -

This adds to the Chery units that went to Cuban Ministry of Tourism, shipments of Great Wall pickups, and even a Great Wall Hover limo presented to Castro.
This will be a good proving ground for all of them. And I'm sure the feedback will make its way north to the Americans.

China Invades Small Caucasus Town

China’s Geely has joined other manufacturers such as Chevrolet, Ford, Hyundai, Renault, Kia, and Toyota, and launched a production line in Russia. Geely opened a plant in Russia’s Caucasus republic of Karachay-Cherkessia, China’s state news agency Xinhua reports.

Russian car company Derways has already started assembling Geely-brand vehicles, and wants to have finished 1,100 units by the end of February. The annual production of Geely will be no lower than 12,000 units. Derways was launched by a local vodka producer in 2004, and is turning into a manufacturing hub for the Chinese.

A year ago, the company started CKD production for Lifan cars. Derways is also scheduled to manufacture for other Chinese brands such as Great Wall Motors, Chery and Haima. The total annual output of the Derways company is estimated to reach 100,000 units.

If you want one of the cars for cheap, move to Cherkessk: Local residents get a discount.

Mesfin Inaugurates Addis Car Assembly Line

The assembly plant for Addis Car was inaugurated by Mesfin Industrial Engineering in collaboration with Geely International Corp, the China based manufacturer of Geely cars, on Saturday, June 18, 2011.

It would be the company's first time to assemble automobiles for the domestic market.

The plant is located on the same premises as Mesfin Industrial's truck assembly plant in Mekelle Town, 780km north of Addis Abeba. The company previously assembled trucks like the Russian made Kamaz.

Following the import of 10 million Br worth of machinery, the plant has five completely knocked down (CKD) assembly lines for Geely cars, enabling it to assemble five automobiles at a time.

The plant has the capacity to annually assemble more than 800 Geely models but is to assemble only, according to the agreement. The cars will be equipped with 1.3cc engines, double airbags, and an anti-breaking system (ABS).

Mesfin Industrial, which has a capital of 260 million Br, obtained the exclusive rights to import, distribute, and service Geely cars in Ethiopia in August 2010, through an agreement with Geely International, which was established in Shanghai in July 2002.

The previous exclusive dealer of Geely cars was Paul Ries & Sons Ethiopia.

Mesfin also has the sole distribution rights in neighbouring countries where Geely does not have a sole agent, such as Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, Djibouti, and Eritrea.

"The substantial technology transfer from Geely International was one of the reasons we decided to assemble the cars,” Yusuf Adamnur, manager of sales and promotion at Mesfin Industrial, told Fortune. “It is one of the leading companies in the production and export market."

Geely International, which has at least eight factories in China, produces nine models of Geely cars and has the capacity to manufacture 42,000 cars annually.

By February 2011, 13 vehicle and tractor assembly plants have been licensed and started operation, according to the Ethiopian Investment Agency (EIA). Out of the total, 10 are foreign owned, according to the agency.

Mesfin Industrial, which was established with a capital of seven million Birr in September 1993, is among the few local companies looking towards car assemblies in a bid to provide cost effective vehicles in Ethiopia.

The company is offering prospective buyers a deal whereby they can purchase the car with a 50pc down payment after which the balance can be paid upon them receiving the car.

"Some brokers and drivers prefer to pay more for second-hand cars of certain brands instead of buying new models of other brands, which would be a challenge for us," Yusuf told Fortune.

This phenomenon was confirmed by Girum Bekele, a car and house broker.

"Many buyers are attracted by lower fuel consumption, lower prices, and strong and durable cars that can easily be resold," he told Fortune.

Mesfin Industrial imported 34 completely built units (CBUs) of Geely cars to test its appeal to middleclass customers at the end of 2010. The cars were sold out at 285,000 Br a piece, which encouraged Mesfin Industrial to install the assembly plant, according to Yusuf.

The company recently started exporting semitrailer fuel tankers with 45,000-litre capacities at a cost of around 48,000 dollars each.

Detroit Electric, Geely announce strategic partnership for electric vehicles
http://www.autoblog.com/2013/04/25/detroit-electric-geely-ec7-ev-electric-vehicles/

Press Release
GEELY AND DETROIT ELECTRIC ENTER STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP TO CO-DEVELOP PURE ELECTRIC VEHICLES FOR CHINESE MARKET

Shanghai - 25 April 2013 - Geely Automobile Group, a prominent China-based global car manufacturer, and Detroit Electric Inc, a leading electric vehicle manufacturer, have announced at the Shanghai Motor Show that the two companies have entered into strategic partnership to co-develop pure electric vehicles and related electric drive systems for the Chinese market.

Under the terms of the partnership the first model of pure electric vehicles will go on sale under Geely‟s Emgrand brand starting in 2014.

After an initial three years of feasibility studies and a joint development programme, the two companies have selected Geely‟s best-selling Emgrand EC7 model in the domestic Chinese market as the base vehicle on which to develop a class-leading pure electric vehicle.

The EC7-based EV, called the EC7-EV, will be co-branded with a „Detroit Electric – Technology‟ badge and sales are expected to commence in the first quarter of 2014. The vehicle will initially be sold primarily to business users and public-sector organisations, and the two companies are forecasting sales of around 3,000 units in the first 12 months, growing to 30,000 in three years‟ time.

A joint development and engineering team has been formed to work together in all areas of the EV powertrain solution, including electric motor, vehicle management system, advanced thermo-managed battery pack, battery management system and a twin-speed high-torque gearbox. The partnership also extends to the formulation of a joint venture company to manufacture the critical EV powertrain components and associated parts, situated close to Geely‟s headquarters in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province. Geely also operates six car assembly and powertrain manufacturing plants across China.

The new EC7-EV model will offer both medium-range (with a driving range of 165km per charge) and long-range options (an approximate range of 258km per charge). Building on

Detroit Electric‟s performance DNA, the vehicle can deliver class-leading acceleration (0- 100kph acceleration under eight seconds) and a top speed exceeding 200kph. Whatever the preferred performance characteristics for the chosen chassis, the innovative Detroit Electric twin-speed high-torque gearbox is engineered to provide exceptional levels of energy efficiency.

"This is a very significant step in the development of the Detroit Electric business and is testimony to our innovative technology and engineering capabilities," comments Albert Lam, Chairman and Group CEO of Detroit Electric. "Detroit Electric will jointly develop the EC7- EV, covering all aspects of the powertrain and chassis, safety, vehicle dynamics, system integration, NVH and other items. We have been working alongside Geely for some time to optimise the EV drive technologies for integration into the vehicles and this partnership will now fast-track both Geely and Detroit Electric to realising the great EV market potential in the Chinese market. I am confident that we can become a leader of pure electric vehicles in the Chinese market within the next 18 months. I am sure it is going to be a world class product."

Mr Feng, President of Emgrand, added: "Our partnership with a leading electric vehicle technology provider such as Detroit Electric will enable us to enhance and accelerate our own expertise and knowledge in this area. The EC7-EV will enable us to provide a wider vehicle choice to our customers and it also reiterates our commitment to providing alternate energy vehicles to the market in China."

Earlier this month Detroit Electric unveiled its first production vehicle, the SP:01. Boasting an impressive 249 km/h top speed and covering the 0-100km/h sprint in a blistering 3.7 seconds, the SP:01 is the world‟s fastest pure-electric production car. The SP:01 also makes its public debut at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show.

About Detroit Electric:

Detroit Electric is an iconic brand in the electric vehicle sector. The company began life in 1906 and soon established itself as the market leader and most prolific manufacturer of electric cars. The brand was revived in 2008 by Albert Lam, former Group CEO of the Lotus Engineering Group and Executive Director of Lotus Cars of England, with a vision to produce an electric vehicle that seamlessly integrates refined aesthetics, innovative technology, superior handling and performance.

In March 2013 Detroit Electric announced the establishment of its corporate headquarters in the iconic Fisher Building, located in downtown Detroit. The company‟s first production car, the SP:01 goes on sale in many of Detroit Electric‟s target markets by the end of August. It will be followed by a new family of all-electric production cars. The SP:01 will be produced at a new Detroit Electric production site in Wayne Country, Michigan. The dedicated facility will have an annual capacity of 2,500 vehicles and create over 180 manufacturing and sales-related jobs.
