BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - Great Wall Motor Co Ltd and the government of Russia's Tatarstan region will sign a letter of intent tomorrow to set up a vehicle manufacturing joint venture in Tatarstan, according to the region's trade minister Khafiz Salikhov.

Speaking at the Russian Expo in Beijing, Salikhov said Great Wall Motor will set up a production in Tatarstan. No further details were provided.

Great Wall Motor said earlier this year that it is considering producing at least 25,000 units a year of its Hover SUV in Russia via investment in a local company or establishing a plant

GWM considers Ukraine plant after trouble in Russia

BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - Great Wall Motor is considering a change in location for a planned 70 mln usd factory to Ukraine from Russia if the project continues to be blocked by the Russian government, the South China Morning Post reported, citing a company official.

The plant, which is scheduled to have a maximum assembly capacity of 50,000 cars mainly for sale in Russia, was scheduled to begin operations by mid-2007, the Hong Kong newspaper reported.

However, the timetable has been delayed due to Russian concerns that the factory will undercut locally owned producers.

'We will make the final consideration early next year,' the newspaper quoted Great Wall Motor deputy general manager Bai Xuifei as saying.

China's Ministry of Commerce has said it is in contact with Russian authorities to mediate, and the company expects a final decision later this month, the report said.

Russia currently accounts for 33 pct of the exports of Great Wall, China's largest pick-up truck and sport-utility vehicle maker

Great Wall Motor ends joint venture in Russia.

November 19, 2008 (Gasgoo.com) - China's largest SUV and truck maker Great Wall Motor Co said earlier this week that it has decided to terminate its joint venture in Russia because of hard industry protectionist measures in the country, the Wall Street Journal online reported on Tuesday.

The joint venture, called Great Wall Alabuga Motor Open Joint Stock, was set up in March 2007 by Great Wall Motor and Land & Property Management Authority of the Republic of Tatarstan in the Russian Federation was scheduled for operation early last year. Great Wall owns 75 percent of the joint venture and the Tatarstan agency owns the remainder.

Great Wall said in a statement that "the long-awaited tax concessions by the Russian government in the special economic zone have not been approved, which prompted the automaker to quit the production plan.

"We'll not build manufacturing plants in Russia any more," said deputy general manager Bai Xuefei. "But we'll look for other Russian partners to assemble our vehicles for distribution in the Russian and European markets."

Great Wall Motor has become the largest Chinese brand in the Russian market since it entered the country in 2004. This year it expects to double sales in Russia to 20,000 vehicles.
