2011 sales of Trumpchi below expectations
Having been on the market for more than half a year, sales of GAC Motor's own brand sedan, the Trumpchi, have been less than stellar. Around 10,000 Trumpchis have been sold since the beginning of the year to July, Beijing Business Today reported today. Meanwhile, GAC General Manager Wu Song said that the manufacturer has revised its annual sales goal for the Trumpchi from 30,000 to 20,000.
"Prices of vehicles from Japanese joint ventures have decreased significantly, so own brand cars have lost their cost advantage," Mr. Wu commented, going further to say that the market was oversaturated.
GAC has been using the domestic character of the car in order to attract Chinese buyers, with Mr. Wu saying that the manufacturer would compete vigorously to create a world class Chinese brand. However, for the Trumpchi (pictured) to compete with international brands, GAC needs not only vigor, but quality. According to Mr. Wu, the Trumpchi has attained the fifth highest ranking in the C-NCAP safety test, well ahead of many JV vehicles.
GAC will be revising the price of the Trumpchi down by 10,000 yuan ($1,569). GAC dealers offer other discount for the car in order to maximize sales.
