Great Wall Motor to export pickups to Australia.

October 28, 2008 - After securing a $440-mln order for exporting 4,500 Deer pickups to Cuba, China's automaker Great Wall Motor recently announced that it will export its Sailor and Wingle pickups to Australia, said xinhuanet.com today.

As an important market that sells 1 million vehicles every year, Australia has strict standards for auto imports. Great Wall is well prepared for these standards and its vehicles have met Australia's strict ADR (Australian Design Rule) requirements. In eco-friendliness and safety, the Sailor and Wingle pickup models for export to Australia have been upgraded on the versions sold in the domestic market to comply with the Euro III+OBD standard.

Great Wall said its Sailor pickup for sale abroad is also higher priced than that sold at home. The exported version of the Sailor pickup will sell in Australia for an equivalent of 120,000 yuan ($17,560), and the export of this pickup model to the Australian market will reach 3,000 units annually.

An executive from Great Wall revealed that the company will also export its SUVs and sedans to Australia for sale. The Great Wall Hover SUV is going though related certification in Australia. In addition, the Great Wall Florid sedan to go on sale next month domestically is expected to enter the overseas markets as well.

One of Great Wall Motor's long-term strategies is to explore the global markets. In early October, the company shipped 1,500 pickups to Cuba. This is the first batch of the 4,500 pickups ordered by the Cuban government from the Chinese pickup maker.

Great Wall Motor eyes new Russia jv next year

November 26, 2008

Shanghai, November 26 (Gasgoo.com) A Great Wall Motor spokesman said the company is in talks with a major Russia importer for distribution of vehicles in the country, a Xinhua report said today.

Shang Yugui told reporters in an interview that cooperation talks with a Russia importer have indeed come to the final stage but he has nothing to declare at the present.

The report said the ongoing talks may end in the two parties jointly building a joint ventue for assembly of Great Wall's Hafu SUV and some sedan models. More details are expected earlier next year.

Industry analysts say Great Wall may not expect to hold the majority stake in the planning venture as before under the current protectionist regulations from the Russia government and it shall prepare to change their way of investment in the country in order to lower risks.

Great Wall announced earlier last week that it has terminated its joint venture in Russia called Great Wall Alabuga Motor Open Joint Stock, as it failed to get tax concessions from government.

The joint venture planned to build a plant to make Great Wall Motor vehicles after signing an agreement in 2005. Great Wall owns 75 percent of the joint venture and the Tatarstan agency owns the remainder.

Great Wall Motor has become the largest Chinese brand in the Russian market since it entered the country in 2004. This year it expects to double sales in Russia to 20,000 vehicles.

Great Wall Motor to make cars in Bulgaria

December 10, 2008
China's largest sport utility vehicle maker, Great Wall Motor Co, plans to start manufacturing cars under its badge in Bulgaria, the government said in a statement on Tuesday.

In a joint venture with a Bulgarian partner, Great Wall plans to invest 80 million euros in a new car plant at Lovech, about 170 km northeast of Sofia, the government said after Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev met with Great Wall's vice presidents.

Bulgarian media have reported that private company Great Wall's investment partner is probably local firm Litex.

The project, which will employ about 1,500 people, is expected to be launched at the start of 2009. No other details were disclosed.

Bulgaria, which sees Foreign Direct Investment dropping by at least 1.0 billion euros from a record 6.5 billion in 2007, is struggling to attract production-linked investment to boost its exports and decrease risks from its huge current account deficit.

French car parts maker Montupet, Japan's Yazaki, a supplier of vehicle power and data solutions, and Belgian company Melexis , which designs electronic automotive chips, have also invested in new production units in Bulgaria.

In April, Great Wall, maker of Hover SUVs, said it was diversifying into car production and plans 10 billion yuan in investment over the next three years, including 3 billion yuan to shore up its research and development capability.

The Bulgarian government quoted Great Wall executives as saying they will not freeze their investment projects because of the global financial crisis.

at the beggining it seems ok with lowcosts of employment and being an european union country but there is no automotive industry in bulgaria...that may cost expensive...they have to transport spare parts from Turkland or Romania...:notsure: :nono:

According to China Car Times, GWM (It will be known as GWM in NZ and Australia), launched here in October last year. Initial model is a 2.3 double cab utility with a price tag of under NZ$20,000 which will undercut rivals by thousands. This will be followed by a single cab utility, a compact SUV, probably the Hover, and an entry-level light car. Ironically, they will be distributed by ATECO, which also signed a deal to import Chery cars this year.

Keep you posted. :D

I have found picture of Australian registered Great Wall Sailor double cab on the net but having trouble posting it to this forum. Also, from China Car Times, GWM is currently updating the Hover for 08/09 and will be exporting 3000 pick-ups to Australia. These are a mixture of Sailor and Wingle pick-ups that have been designed to meet Australian design rules. The Hover will also be redesigned for Australian market. GWM has also modified it's pick-ups to meet Australian Euro 3 emissions standards.
Still waiting for news about GWM in NZ but methinks these new modifications might also be for New Zealand market.

Any help would be appreciated. :thumb:

Great Wall Sailor with Australian reagistration.

Looks like Nissan Navara. Great Wall should do well in NZ and Australia because of the lucrative pick-up market.
