More Great Wall models have been announced for the Australian market with the original range of Hover, Wingle and Salior being joined by Cowry, Deer, Hover limousine and Peri. Great Wall aims to sell in the entry model markets which are currently dominated by Korean brands such as Kia and Hyundai. It is belived that Great Wall's range of pick-ups (or 'utes' as we call them in NZ and Australia) will be the main source of sales in Australia, since there is a very big market for pick-ups there which produces big money and competition from the main players: Toyota, Ford and Australian GM brand Holden. Great Wall has also tested vehicles in Australia itself.

And what about it's supposedly main competitor from China, Chery down here as well? Did they cut and run like Cadillac did or have they both plans to fight on both sides of the Tasman?

First Chinese-brand cars arrive ... and they're utes

March 27, 2009

THE first Chinese-brand vehicles to be sold in Australia will be in dealerships by mid-year when a local importer begins shipping in two workhorse utes made by Chinese carmaker Great Wall.

About 50 dealers will offer two models from the privately owned Chinese maker with starting prices under $20,000.

Independent vehicle importer Ateco Automotive expects to sell a couple of hundred a month and has spent four years working on the deal.

The models, called Wingle and Sailor in China, will bear alpha-numeric names here and are just the beginning for Chinese car imports, according to Ateco managing director Ric Hull.

Mr Hull made more than 20 trips to China to select potential suppliers and whittled the list down to Great Wall and Chery, which supplied hybrid cars for the recent Beijing Olympic Games.

"Chery was an obvious pick because they're the largest of the independents," he said. "We ended up with Great Wall because we like them, their products and how they do business."

Great Wall, based in Baoding, south of Beijing, already exports to 120 countries in Asia, Europe, Africa and Eastern Europe.

The Great Wall utes were originally due on sale late last year but Ateco postponed the launch after exchange rates moved against the Australian dollar.

Ateco chief Neville Crichton said China's car industry was ambitious but pragmatic.

"They want to be No 1 in the world eventually, like they are with whitegoods and televisions and every other appliance," he said. "But they're realistic about where the product should sit and how much time it could take to become a major player."

He was impressed by the pace of industrial and infrastructure development in the country.

"Every time you went back things were vastly improved -- from the roads, to the manufacturing plant and office blocks. Everything's new and immaculate," he said.

Mr Hull said crash safety issues, which sank early attempts to export Chinese vehicles to Europe, had been overcome with internal testing by the companies to international standards.

The Great Wall utes will be the first Chinese-brand vehicles ever sold in Australia, although not the first Chinese-made cars.

In recent years Volkswagen sourced some Polo small sedans from its Chinese factory for sale here on a trial basis.

Reanult and GWM have signed the agreement under which Chinese will produce Renault vehicles in its factory in Guacara, Venezuela.
Spokesman of GWM announced that they have no plans for a JV outside of China with Renault.

An overseas marketing vice general manager of Great Wall Motor Co., Ltd. denied the saying that the Chinese automaker would set up a joint-venture factory with the French auto titan Renault in Venezuela.

Earlier reports said that in mid-June 2009, Great Wall Motor signed a letter of intent with Renault about their joint-venture production in Venezuela.

Both sides would manufacture vehicles in a factory, which belongs to a local partner of the Chinese automaker, they added. The factory, with a designed yearly production capacity of 22,000 vehicles, would produce 15,000 vehicles for Renault and the remaining for Great Wall Motor a year, they continued.

The reports even said that Renault would build Logan, one of its car models, and Sandero, one of its hatchback products, in the factory, with some parts imported from Colombia. The French auto titan has manufactured Logan cars in Colombia for four years.

If the joint-venture plan comes true, the French auto titan would invest USD 10 million and the Chinese automaker would contribute USD 65 million, they predicted.

The vice general manager of the Chinese automaker explained that Renault would not cooperation with Great Wall Motor, but a Venezuela-based dealer of Great Wall Motor.

Its local dealer had planned to build a factory, with an annual production capacity of 22,000 to 25,000 vehicles, to manufacture Great Wall-branded products in the form of knock down (KD), said the vice general manager.

Later, Renault went to the dealer and hoped that the dealer could also assemble Renault-branded vehicles. Both sides signed an agreement, and in the future, both Great Wall-branded and Renault-branded products will be assembled in the factory, he disclosed. But Great Wall Motor itself has had no plan to set up a joint venture with Renault or join hands with it, he stressed.

Notably, in March 2009, Great Wall Motor President Wang Fengying told that the US auto giant Chrysler LLC terminated the cooperation negotiations with her company.

Analysts said that the termination resulted from the tie-up of the US auto giant and Italy’s Fiat. But the Chinese automaker denies the saying, stressing that Chrysler and Fiat had just signed a nonbinding agreement.

The president said that Great Wall Motor would pay the most attention to the development of its proprietary brands, and that it had not contacted any partner yet.

The automaker sold 125,000 vehicles in 2008, including 55,000 ones for export and falling far behind the goal of 200,000 ones. This year, it will release 13 new products and reach the 200,000-vehicle goal.

About bloody time!
Chinese cars are coming to NZ (excluding the Rovers which are imported here)
Two twin-cab utilities, the V240 in both 4x2 and 4x4 configurations and the SA220 in 4x2 only, are the first Great Wall models to be released onto the Australasian market.

The V240 4x2 will sell in New Zealand for $26,990 plus on road costs, with the 4x4 option costing $3000 extra. The SA220 will sell for $21,990 plus on road costs.

Both vehicles offer electric windows, alloy wheels, leather trimmed seats and air conditioning. Great Wall vehicles will be sold and supported initially in New Zealand by a network of six dealers and have a three year/100,000km warranty.

The Australian range will be common to that sold in New Zealand with over 45 dealers there at launch. Ateco Automotive, the Auckland and Sydney-based importer, has been negotiating to bring Great Wall to New Zealand for over three years. According to the Managing Director of Ateco Australia, Mr Ric Hull, “Great Wall is one of China?s leading car makers and it has been consistently at the top of its domestic car market with its Ute and SUV models.

“This year China will make and sell more vehicles than any other country in the world. Every mainstream car and component manufacturer is represented there. Access to technology is virtually unlimited. China?s car industry has come a long way in a very short time,” he said.

Where I live, there is a building with a car lot that used to sell used cars. Since earier this month, the company building has been brought and all the cars were sold but the building wasn't demolished. Now with news of Great Wall's entry into the New Zealand market, and with a planned six dealers natiowide and another Chinese company (Zonda) already in the region and doing well in business terms, could this mean Great Wall have brought it?
The suspense continues.........

I have just found out that a company called Huston Motors who deals Mitsubishi cars where I live will be one of six Great Wall dealerships around New Zealand. Models are Wingle (V240) and Sailor (SA220). New vehicles to be released are Hover and Florid. Good thing is, Great Wall can sell the Peri here because Fiat do not sell the Panda in New Zealand.
I'll see if I can get down there and get some pictures.

The Florid's largest order left for Algeria

At the end of June 2009, 300 units Florid together with 500 units Wingle were transported to Xingang port waiting for the vessel to Algeria. This features the Florid's first largest order in its export history.

These vehicles were ordered by Algerian GMS Company, who is the exclusive distributor of Great Wall Motors in Algeria. During the two-year's cooperation, more than 3000 Great Wall vehicles were shipped to Algeria. 1800 units out of them were shipped in the first half of 2009. And meanwhile, GMS has been attaching great importance to the establishment of the network. Up to the time of writing, a total of 7 self-owned showrooms, and 19 dealers as well were set up across over Algeria, becoming an example of Great Wall Motors in North African Market.

As the second largest continent, the African auto market has great potential with an annual car sales volume of 1.3 million units, and over 60% of them are sedan. Algeria is one of the comparatively developed countries in North Africa, with an annual car sales volume of 300,000 units. The successful debut of Florid will surely be a great push for the sales of the future new models and the popularization of Great Wall Brand in the local market.
