(SinoCast via COMTEX) --The first batch of 20 Hafei Saibao taxies recently have been put into operation in Harbin, capital city of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.

This is the first time for the local sedan to have entered the taxi market in the Ice City.

The move aims to support the development of the local automobile industry, a person familiar with the affair said.

Hafei Saibao, the first 3-compartment sedan launched by Harbin Hafei Motor Co., a Harbin-based independent auto maker, went on sale in April, 2005.

The car, which has passed EUR 3 standard and crash test regulations, was designed and engineered by Italy's Pininfarina. It is powered by a 1.6 or a 2.0-liter Mitsubishi engine.

The first batch of Saibao taxies will have two colors, and the starting fare will be priced at CNY 8, according to the person.

Moreover, Harbin plans to gradually make Saibao the main model in the city's taxi market, and make its proportion to the total new models to nearly 30%.

I think it depends city to city - some cities taxi co's just choose cars at random once the eight year period is up on the taxis that they are using. I talked to one driver and it seems to be upto the drivers what they buy and use as a taxi.

Qingdao's aging fleet of Santana's and old Jettas seems to being slowly changed to a newer fleet of Jettas and Santana 2000's as well as some Chery's, Chevrolet's, Geely's and even the odd Zhonghua!

Qingdao has to be one of the worse cities for nice taxies. All the other east coast cities have drivers that wear shirts/ties and nice clean cars. Qingdao taxis seem to be the exact opposite.
