Hongqi to launch a new model each year, starting with HQE.

May 12, 2008 - FAW's premium Hongqi (Red Flag) division has plans to launch an own-brand vehicle model each year starting 2009. The carmaker will release its HQE limousine next year, to be followed by the Hongqi SUV. The sales target of the HQ3 this year is set at 1,400 units.

The first ever Hongqi SUV model was displayed as a concept car at the recent Beijing auto show. It measures 4,805mm (L), 2,000/2,042mm (W, including the rear mirror), and 1,800mm (H), and powered by FAW's self-developed 12-cylinder, 8-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines for choice.

The HQ3 was made on the platform of the Toyota Crown Magesta 8-cylinder car. Starting in 2009, Hongqi will launch a self-developed car model designed as high-end SUVs. The HQE's design and development is in progress. Its production and sales will start in 2009. The design of HQE is based on the concept car that Hongqi displayed at the 2005 Shanghai auto show.

Hongqi has set up five dealership stores across the country since July 2007 and has sold only 500 HQ3 cars. The carmaker aims to increase the sales to 1,400 this year. A sales executive of Hongqi said that the HQ3 will not make profits unless it sells at least 5,000 units annually.

Hongqi is FAW's flagship line, which also includes the self-driving HQ3. In addition to its own range of vehicles, FAW also makes the Toyota Prius and several VWs and Audis under local joint ventures. The Hongqi HQE may find its share of buyers in China's burgeoning luxury market.

FAW Car to merge Hongqi, Besturn sales networks.

July 30, 2008 - The project of merging the sales networks of FAW's Hongqi (Red Flag) and Beturn brands is being carried out positively, and the final result will be made available in two weeks, reported China Business New today, citing an insider from FAW Car.

The report said that after the sales networks of Hongqi and Besturn are integrated, the strategic framework of FAW Car Co., Ltd. will be adjusted accordingly, with its subsidiary FAW Hongqi Car Sales Company to be controlled by FAW Car Sales Co., Ltd, which has been only responsible for the sales of the Besturn brand.

Industry analysts said that the integration of Hongqi's sales into the Besturn network will reset the market orientation of Hongqi products to make the time-honored brand (of Chinese leaders' sedan in the '50s-'70s) more responsive to the changing market demand. However, opinions are divided reportedly in the FAW Car management over the Hongqi-Besturn sales network merger.

In 2006, FAW's premium Hongqi division had an independent sales network to aim at the high-end market, believing the big name would bring big sales. But the market didn't think so: two years later only a few hundred Hongqi cars were sold each month and now this renowned brand has to rely on the Besturn network.

Hongqi to develop new models for sales growth

August 06, 2008

Shanghai, August 6 (Gasgoo.com) Not to rely on Toyota's Crown any more, FAW Car's Hongqi brand will develop a new lineup of its own-brand models for sales growth by partnering with Austrian auto design firm Magna Steyr, reported 21st Century Business Herald today, citing an executive of FAW's Hongqi division.

The Hongqi brand of FAW, a Chinese partner of Japan's Toyota Motor, has its historic and political value as a 'state sedan' for senior Chinese leaders in the 1950s-80s. Although the sales of Hongqi (HQ) sedans have slowed down and FAW's Hongqi divison is losing money, this "Red Flag" brand-name was evalaued at 6.067 billion yuan ($886 million) in 2007 -- the biggest market value of a car brand in China's auto industry.

Because of the poor sales of the current HQ models, their production has mostly stopped, except the HQ3 styled from the Toyota Crown Majesta, and FAW's Hongqi division has decided to develop a new HQ lineup for the brand's recovery and growth in the market. Magna Steyr, the designer of Mercedes-Benz's "4MATIC" and the BMW X3, is engaged in designing the B-Class, D-Class, E-Class HQ sedans and other HQ vehicle models.

The B-Class and D-Class HQ sedans will be first launched in the new HQ portfolio after the HQ3, and the HQE will debut next year as a state guest sedan. In addition, HQ vans and HQ SUVs are also expected to go on sale in 2009. The "Red Flag" is likely to regain its former glory.

FAW to relaunch own-brand Hongqi in October

September 03, 2008

Shanghai, September 3 (Gasgoo.com) FAW's Hongqi will be relaunched at the beginning of October after production is suspended for months, reported China Business New Wednesday, citing a source from FAW Car.

The move comes after FAW Car Co integrated the sales networks of Hongqi and Besturn in order to save costs. But according to the unnamed source, the Hongqi to go on sale next month is still a 2007 model as production of renewed ones is unlikely to be resumed before the end of this year.

Sales of Hongqi cars continue to dwindle in the first half of this year, with only 788 units sold, all from inventories. Industry analysts said that the integration of Hongqi's sales into the Besturn network marks FAW's lack of a mature plan to develop the hongqi brand.

In 2006, FAW's premium Hongqi division had built an independent sales network aiming at the high-end market. But the market didn't think so: two years later only a few hundred Hongqi cars were sold each month and now this renowned brand has to rely on the Besturn network.

FAW Group focuses resources on own-brand models

October 23, 2008
Shanghai, October 23 (Gasgoo.com) On October 11, Tianjin FAW said it will produce the company's first A-class car based on Toyota's ninth-generation Corolla platform. On October 18, FAW Car put its Hongqi Shengshi (HQ3) onto the market, and the next day the company launched its 2009 Besturn model and started construction of its second plant.

These moves are seen as a sign of FAW's gradually focusing its human, financial and material resources on making cars of its independent brands, said Beijing News today, citing an industry analyst. These all-out efforts to promote its own-brand models are closely related to FAW's in-house development plan, which says that the Chinese car giant aims to sell 2 million vehicles by 2010, and half of them must be FAW's own-brand vehicles.

In 2007, FAW sold 1,465,000 vehicles, which include 620,000 own-brand vehicles. This means that FAW has to produce and sell by 2010 another 400,000 own-brand cars at least to fulfill the sales target of 1 million own-brand vehicles.

According to FAW's in-house development plan, the Hongqing brand will target the high-end markets but its sales have to be boosted, the Besturn brand will fortify its B-class market by promoting its low-price-high-quality features, and Tianjin FAW will expand its A0-class and A-class markets.

In addition to promoting the three independent brands, FAW's another important task is to enhance its research and development (R&D) capabilities. Recently the FAW Technical Center has recruited many auto engineers, designers and other talents for the in-house development of sedans, buses and mini-cars.

Re: Hongqi news

Latest news about the HQE: the FAW management has decided to continue the development of the HQE in its original form (concept on Shanghai Show 2005, than named HQD) and not the later version with the old Hongqi front end.

FAW gearing up for revival of Red Flag brand

December 03, 2010
First Auto Works (FAW) has got approval from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China (MIIT) to produce five Hongqi or Red Flag-branded cars, including an all-electric sedan, two hybrid sedans and two limousines, Nan Fang Daily reported Friday.

At present, the Chinese automaker has completed prototype development of the Hongqi hybrid sedans, which can reduce fuel consumption by 40% and emissions by 30%. The two hybrid sedans listed on the new car catalog are all equipped with new 1.5L engine.

In addition, FAW plans to put in place a production base with annual capacity of 11,000 hybrid sedans and 1,000 hybrid buses by 2012. In 2003, it expects to produce 30,000 Hongqi C131 cars per year.

FAW Car Co. (000800.SZ), a passenger car division of First Auto Works (FAW), has been well prepared and will officially begin production of the C131 model at the end of 2011, said FAW Car general manger Hang Peijie.

Separately, FAW announced plan to revival the Hongqi brand in August, according to which 1.76 billion yuan ($264 million) will be spent on building a production line for the C131 model with a projected annual capacity of 30,000 units in 2013; 690 million yuan on the plant producing 4GC engines to power Hongqi and other FAW cars; 650 million yuan on expanding the stamping workshop.
