Agreed.

I really think there's alot of potential right now in Chinese car names. If they come out with cool looking cars and have a big marketing blitz, I'm sure they can make it.

For instance, that green boxy Scion/Toyota lookalike from Great Wall Motors called CoolBear is something that has a nice ring to it. It's not fake like Toyota's xB or xA, those sound like they tried too hard to be "hip" to young people when they really aren't.

I've noticed that the Chinese still might have a bit of low self esteem and don't want to use their own brands yet don't realise, that with a good product a brand can really make it big in no time, just look at, say iPod. Those didn't exist a while back and now everything's an iPod. Also, Lenovo is doing pretty well dispite dual personality disorder with their IBM brand.

Again, my point is, great products make the name, not the other way around.

And yes, I know Mercedes was Benz's kid, but it's still a girl's name, yes? I know a girl named Mercedes (a favorite name of strippers too ;) )

Barvarian is a location, yes?
I thought Mercedes was the daughter of a car salesman, who ordered the first batch of such models from Benz. Not sure since I heard about it long time ago.

I highly doubt that Chinese cars will have Chinese names in the US. Chery for one sounds way too much "Chevy." And since their working with Chrysler, they'll probably be released as Chryslers, like GM's Aveo.

Speaking of which, I'm selling my BMW due to the nazis, never buying a Renault due to French Pacifism, never buying a Toyota, Mazda or Nissan due to Pearl Harbor, forget the Ferrari due to Mussolini, Screw Rover, MG, Triumph due to English colonization, and forget my own countries brands for the way we treated Native Americans.

Anyone have a clue what I can drive now?
LOL! You could drive a Saab, the Swedish seem pretty cool. They helped sneak a lot of Jews out of Germany during WWII, while remaining ostensibly neutral.

I guess we'll get used to the names eventually, except for the wierd ones.
But, why are the Chinese coming anyway? To clog up a market with already too many competing brands with product thats at least a decade late? Why don't they just worry about China's growing needs until a decade from now when they will be on par with the west? I know, they're ambitious and all, but Isn't it better to wait and enter with world-class product at an unbeatable price and quality than to enter too early with a product that barely passes the regulations? I know, its sort of the whole purpose of this forum, "When are the Chinese coming?", but I think we should talk more about Chinese cars in China, and in the developing world, and then we could talk about their arrival as something thats farther off. Call me crazy, but I think they'res a lot of Chinese car companies that will decide to do exactly that, wait 5 or 10 years till they're really ready. Though, with the rising costs of producing in China, making cars in Viet Nam isn't such a bad idea. Just my opinion. :D :D

now how old is she ?? 90 ? :D

back to the topic , I think these names should be changed :

Chery > Chevy , no ... might rename it to Cherena or something like that
Geely > Jilly > Jigili .. ... no .. this one has to be ditched completely
BYD > with a bmw logo and a B letter ... no ... should be something else .
Changan > Its ok and the logo is ok , but its hard to keep track of ...

The only name that sound well are :

Great Walls Motors ( English , refers to china and is quite matching thier suv/4x4 range )

Landwind ( Altho wierd but acceptable )

Maple ( Doesn't suit a luxury line lol , but its acceptable )
