BEIJING (AFX) - Nanjing Automobile Corp said it yesterday began construction of a plant to produce MG Rover cars, as part of its plan to revive the MG Rover brand.

The company said in a statement that total investment in the project, based in Nanjing, will be 2.82 bln yuan.

The plant is expected to make 200,000 cars and 250,000 engines every year, the company said.

The company added that most of MG Rover's machinery and equipment in the UK has already been shipped to China and production is scheduled to start next year.

Nanjing Automobile Corp paid 50 mln stg for MG Rover in July last year, acquiring its assembly lines, engine technology and many of the firm's models

great pics, they must be very excited
I'm surprised it's going to take that long for production to start. Chinese do everything very fast, the 3 gorges dam the worlds largest construction project in history is going to be completed next month, almost 2 years ahead of schedule. The olympics could be held next month too if it were rescheduled because that's how far ahead of schedule beijing is. I thought production of MG rovers would have begun in the middle of this year already. When is SAIC going to begin production? And how many people will be employed in Nanjing auto's MGrover manufacturing plant in Nanjing?

Launch time is November at the Beijing Show, they seem uncertain when the cars will be on sale for some reason but probably January 2007.

No idea, there where 6000 employed when the factory was in the UK and they plan to produce far more cars with it. MG-Rover did at one time have 20,000 in roughly the same factory.

The factory is being transported in containers, so far 3000 have arrived in the port at Nanjing causing the Customs significant overload, about 1000 are on ships and about 500 still to be packed up. They also have to sort out new suppliers for most of the components - its a very big operation to start up from almost nothing!

When money is involved, Chinese are very motivated. :)

What is this MG-Rover.org? I've never heard of it before...

However a great site to visit for MGR history is www.austin-rover.co.uk

No, I am definatly not Chinese and I don't post on www.MGrover.org. ;)
But I am responsible for the Chinese News thread on www.mg-rover.org! :)

Why do you think that you have to be born in China to be able to read a Chinese newspaper?

A very fine site for the history of Austin and Rover but they have no recent news on MG, Austin, Rover, SAIC or Nanjing. :( Its a bit sad that they don't even have Nanjings press releases when they have a fairly comprehensive set of press articles on MG-Rover going back years.
Occasionally the Austin Rover website gets a big scoop due to the fact that Keith Adams (who runs the site) is a journalist. It's coverage is wider than MG -rover.org in that it really covers all the main British brands...but your right for up to the minute info MG-rover.org is superb!
