TOGLIATTI, Russia — Auto-industry tongues have been wagging about French automaker Renault's involvement with Russia's top automaker, Avtovaz.

Here's something more for them to talk about: Ambitious Chinese auto company SAIC has been visiting Avtovaz as well.

According to Russian business daily Vedomosti, SAIC would like to gain a foothold in the rapidly emerging Russian market. Its South Korean subsidiary, SUV producer Ssangyong, already has a deal with SeverstalAvto of Russia for domestic production and distribution of its models. Apparently SAIC would like to do likewise and is thinking of producing some future models — possibly including the resurrected Rover 75 — in Russia.

Avtovaz officials responded by calling the speculation "premature."

SAIC would join a growing list of Chinese auto companies doing business in Russia. Great Wall and Zhongxing are doing nicely with their pickup trucks and SUVs, Chery has just started local assembly and FAW is about to increase its presence in Russia as well.

What this means to you: As new world markets explore each other's assets, it makes for good spectating (and speculating) for the rest of us.

It's very reasonable. as Russian car market should be about 2 million car this year.
And most of this car are in segment of 8-12.000 USD. It is good for China produsers.
I think focused on Russian, Ukrainian markets is one of the main target of China producers.Only then they could go to the USA and EU countries.
