Perhaps Great Wall Motors wants to pay tribute to former leader Deng Xiaoping who famously quoted: "Bùguǎn hēi māo bái māo, zhuō dào lǎoshǔ jiùshì hǎo māo"*, a variation on an old Sichuan folk proverb. Deng was known to appreciate 20th century painter Chen Liantao, whose nature-themed artworks often featured cats as the subject.

Maybe I was right . The name "好猫" (haomao) indeed is taken from the third "mao" reference in Deng Xiaoping's quote.
