you said a mouthful about the need to protect historic buildings, and I agree too about small town life, even in China.
But it seems to be an inevitable pitfall of developing countries. Tearing all the old stuff down indiscriminately that is.
The same happened in Japan and Korea. It's not until years later that the value of that great classical architecture is realized. Then there's an attempt to reproduce from photos ....but it's never the same.
