etsong models

Hello Windy, in April 2005 the Etsong (or Yizhong in Chinese) website (I am still a junior member, according a strange rule I am not allowed to give you a website, but is something like....etsongauto.com) suddenly showed an update of the Lubao. In fact there were four cars shown on this website:
Lubao QE 6400/ CA 6400 UA (this is the picture you show)
Lubao CA 6410 UA (with a new front end, 22 cm longer)
Lande CA 6440 UA/ CA 1020 (the van with a facelift)
Lubao CA 7131 sedan and travelling car (the Montego sedan and estate. Only a photo of the estate was shown.)
Two months later the factory was sold to SGM-Wuling. But the website stayed on the net for the whole year. Now it seems to be closed. The website of the tobacco company itself (yes, Etsong is a tobacco company) had some cars on it before, but now not anymore (....etsong.com).
The photo you show is from the etsongauto.com website.

i spent 5 years building and running a plant about 3 miles from the etsong car plant. it was a half decent idea originally, the idea was to start in 1998 and at that time they could have launched the maestro car, which looks kind of similar to a citroen Zx, but with a much lower price.

but it was too difficult a project to implement. they had the secondhand tooling but no bill of material, and they were a tobacco company with no experience of car making. and there were very few car makers in china then so you couldn't hire in experience either.

another problem, etsong never had a license to make cars, only to make agricultural vehicles. so they had to concentrate on the van version. they are a powerful force in qingdao and probably thought they could get round this, but there is a big difference between local influence and getting beijing to aprove a car project.

you sometimes see these cars about - i've seen the odd one in shanghai and saw one in nanjing today. i drove one once, it was ok, running with a toyota 1.4 engine from faw.

Thanks Erik, that has puzzled me for a while.

I guess they showed some old pictures which had not been seen before to help sell the factory - Sounds like its well dead now.

Does anyone know if the micro cars that are supposed to be produced there now exist yet and sell?

You would have liked the MG turbo version better - that was officialy quicker than some Ferraris when it was launched in 1988!

Just to get back on topic for a sec...

The Ordnance - Shanghai's oldest western-style pub, in Lu-Wan district near where my parents live.

And the not so glamorous city of Taiyuan where some of my friends live. It's very polluted and doesn't have the kind of western-style skyscrapers so popular in the coastal cities and Beijing. Taiyuan is the gateway to China's coal country, so it's kind of like a cold version of West Virginia.

Those photos are awesome!!!! I am definitely gonna revisit Qindao!

I am a little bit surprised there hasn't been a lot photos of Shanghai, China's most photographed city.

Actually back in about 1990 my Dad had an MG Montego Turbo. I was about 18 then and the drag race king of Guildford. There were some issues with the car, like it blew through an SU carb when everything else including the non turbo MG Montegos had been on efi for a few years, and there was a lot of wheelspin and torque steer, but nobody else I knew could lay their hands on a 150 bhp car back then.

The Etsong factory did offer me a car cheap, and obviously the thought of inserting a 2.0 turbo motor did go through my mind.................

I once saw a factory car park out in Huangdao district of Qingdao that had must have had >1000 lu baos!

Thank you Edge, for neglecting to mention China's 12th, and the world's 99th, largest city - Harbin. My adopted hometown, Harbin is also called Moscow of the East, thanks to the many buildings that remain from when it was occupied by the Russians, and later the Japanese.

While not as developed as many of China's other big cities, Harbin is still a modern city, with more KFCs per head of population than anywhere in the world (complete speculation, but Harbinren really love their chicken burgers). But it does have the prettiest pedestrian precinct I've seen - Zhongyang Dajie...

Except its freezing cold outdoors for 60% of the year and the whole city stinks of beer brewing thanks to the excellent location of the Harbin beer brewery.

AND the most famous attraction (quite possibly the only) is 150rmb per ticket and staffed by Russian guards that dont really speak English, nor Chinese. Yes Im talking about the famous Harbin Ice Festival, the locals never seem to visit - its full of Japs, Koreans and Taiwanese that will never go somewhere so cold ever again.

Qingdao万岁！ We have bettter beer.

Hope you didn't get in trouble for speaking your mind.....
you said a mouthful about the need to protect historic buildings, and I agree too about small town life, even in China.

But it seems to be an inevitable pitfall of developing countries. Tearing all the old stuff down indiscriminately that is.
The same happened in Japan and Korea. It's not until years later that the value of that great classical architecture is realized. Then there's an attempt to reproduce from photos ....but it's never the same.

That's fighting talk, that is! You can complain about Harbin's weather, and the horrendously over-priced tickets to the Ice and Snow World (the whole point of that is to keep the locals out) but you can never say anything bad about our beer. It's so good Anheuser Busch (sp?) bought the whole damned company! (but only bought a small stake in Qingdao)
