Hello!

I am new to this forum and the reason for logging on is that I may move to Xiamen for an assignment. Since low level car racing (I drive a BMW M 3 E 36 in endurance racing) and track days is one of the main interrest I may bring a car and in that case I want to import something which has a good resale value in the Xiamen area. What type of cars are popular in terms of vintage and brands? Would a pre 1989 Porsche be popular and have good support in terms of workshops? And how is front engined porsches viewed?

Happy for any input!

I doubt you will find it at all easy to bring a secondhand car into china, even if it is not for road use (and especially if you hope to be able to use it on the road).

I'm afraid you will need to pick up a car locally and then start tuning it (also potentially illegal but don't let that put you off!).

Down in the guangzhou area you may find some interesting cars that found their way over the border from HK - I have seen things like type R civics, Nissan 200SX etc. You'd probably be lucky to find a 944/968 because back when they were being made, nobody in china had enough money. Different story nowadays!

Popular cars are whatever you can afford. For rich Chinese, a maxed out EVO9, SUbaru etc. is just the ticket for local circuit racing, however...most of the 'cool guys' like drifting and buy old Nissans. Most exotic car owners do some lapping days but no competitions in the Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo , m3 etc.
By far the majority of track cars are small hatchbacks and the like. Because of the lower cost of replaceing and repairing, this is where all the best action is. the 1.3-1.6 class is full of serious wheel to wheel heroics.

As for importing...you'll find it impossible. If you'd like a car when you get here, and even better would like to have it prepared, we can help you out. Send me a message and I'll help get whatever you need in terms of cars and equipment.
