does SAIC own over 50% of Ssangyong and do they make Sangyong's in China?

I think SAIC own 51% and are planing on Ssangyong production in China in the future, currently Ssangyong is only produced in South Korea.
Production of the Ssangyong product in China was objected by Ssangyong worker's league. Now SAIC is suffering a lot in S-Korea. Not sure if SAIC can make it posssible to produce in China.

Personally I think SAIC's buying stock of Ssangyong was not a good idea. SAIC does not have many experiences in management of a company in a foreign conntry, although Maybe new leader who was the former presensident of GM China can help a little bit. Ssangyong is trying their best to prevent SAIC from transfering either production or technolog to China. But actually, nowadays any car manufacturer is able to buy car technologies from the market. I think SAIC shall learn from Chery.
Damn SAIC is stupid. I'll never buy a car from them. I'll only buy Chery and Geely cars from now on.
Anyway, SAIC has a lot of money with sufficient resources, e.g., the supplier sources of S-VW and S-GM. They have a lot of advantages compared to other China demestic brands.

They obsorbed the whole R&D team from former Rover. It is said that they have a big plan of developing new cars, i.e., around 30 models by the year of 2010.

So, we will wait and see their outputs. Maybe next year we would see something. The car from SAIC could be competitive.
It's totally lame to buy SY if SAIC can't use the technology, design, and mfg elsewhere. What, just to have a foothold in the S Korean market? Who da heck cares? It's a small, fully matured, and over saturated market dominated by Hyundai.

Chinese companies, as they get richer, HAS GOT TO BE CAREFUL when it comes to buying assets overseas. DO NOT let ego and pride get in the way of level-headed thinking.
SAIC own about 43% of Ssangyong, but it makes them the largest shareholder and it's the controlling interest.

Ssangyongs have recently started to be sold in china.

Also there is a mercedes benz designed people carrier/ minibus which is built in korea by ssangyong (MB100?) and a company under SAIC called Huizhong are already assembling that in china.

Expect to see ssangyong vehicles or at least their technology being used in china built SAIC cars in near future.

Ssangyong labor union doesn't care if SAIC moves the entire design files to China or not, all they care about is keeping their jobs. They are more communist than Chinese themselves.

SAIC will produce Ssangyong products in China, all of it.

Ssangyong is trying their best to prevent SAIC from transfering either production or technolog to China.
No they are not. All the labor union is demanding is a job security.

So where do I buy Toyota-grade reliability from? Honda's handling?
So where do I buy Toyota-grade reliability from? Honda's handling?[/QUOTE]

Good quality and reliability depend on a good quality management system which indudes the following:

1) reliability design
2) quality control of outsouced parts
3) quality control of assembly process

For the above first point, you can have the related knowlede from the market. e.g., you can buy the quality management bookets, e.g., ISO/TS16949, SPC, MSA, APQP. You can even access to Toyota's website (registered as a supplier) to know about supplier quality control requirements as well as TPS things.

Now there are a lot of experienced people in China who are engaged in the automotive industry. There will be more and more as China's auto industry is growing fast. You know, the most factor of sucess is the qualified people.

What about Chengdu New Dadi Automobile Co.? They are selling a vehicle named Musso which (according to Global Auto Index) is based on SSangyong Musso. Is that true? Anyway the cars look completelly the same.

Does any big Chinese manufacturer own New Dadi or is the company independent?
When SAIC and MG Rover were in partnership, an MG-branded Ssangyong Rexton redesigned by Peter Stevens was shown to workers and dealers at Longbridge. There was also talk of a Rover-branded variant of the Rhodius people carrier. It's not inconceivable that both could wear Roewe badges in the future.
does anyone have more information about this company-new dadi? i was on their website, & saw the musso that they are selling. it seems to me that, not only do they have the musso body, but the original 2.3l gas engine & the 3.2l diesel engine as well. are they copies, or licensed products?
Here is a picture of New Dadi Musso from their official site. The car looks completely the same as original. As it also bears same name, I'm sure it's a licenced product.

Hazik, Chinoy and Martin's questions

In October of 2004 SAIC outbid China Bluestar for a 48.9% stake in the troubled Ssangyong. SAIC has since increased its stake to 51%. This acquisition brought to a halt Ssangyong's ongoing efforts to enter the Chinese market through companies like Jiangling, Yacheng Auto Group, etc..

SAIC has a subsidiary called Huizhong Auto (SHAC)that makes a small volume of the Ssangyong Istana van in China.

Last year SAIC had a so-called "S" project to produce SUV's on a Ssangyong Kyron platform in China but the Chinese government nixed the project application in March 2006. Presumably it was trying to counter industry overcapacity concerns. But SAIC-Ssangyong have not given up on this plan. It is said they also plan to introduce Ssangyong-based vehicles to the US market.

Martin and Chinoy, as far back as 2000, Xindadi produced a Musso CKD under Ssangyong license. But in light of the SAIC buyout of Ssangyong I don't think that outdated Musso production is still ongoing as it might be a conflict of interest. Xindadi also produced a Motivity SUV that I think was based on a Nanhai Fudi body. Last production figures I have for both models was 861 YTD through August 2005.
btw Ssangyong has a long standing tie-up with Mercedes and so the 3.2L diesel. As you can also see Ssangyong's Chairman mirrors Mercedes.

As our esteemed fellow CCF member Eric Laofan, recently pointed out, Zotye Auto of Zhejiang is now brandishing the Xindadi logo. This can be seen on the Zotye website. So at the Beijing show last fall, I asked a Zotye rep about this. His answer was that Zotye had acquired Xindadi. But I still have my doubts about this because there is no other indication of it anywhere. Maybe someone here can clarify it for us.

Hmm that's kinda weird.....Oh well what's next a redesigned Kyron or Actyon badged as a Roewe?

I wish SAIC's partner will someday export the China-made Ssangyong Istana in the Philippines..I really miss this one..

hmm I heard from somewhere that Ssangyong does not have a right to sell Istana to oversea. When Ssangyong and Mercedes ended the partnership, Ssanyong got a chairman but not Istana if I remember it correctly.
Hello Dragin, a good post! Chengdu Xindadi produced 7044 vehicles in 2006, and last January-February 850 vehicles together. I don't know if the Musso is included. The Xindadi website (www.new-dadi.com) still shows the Musso, but it seemed that the website hasn't recently been updated.
About Zotye: the news that Zotye bought Dadi also came to me from other sources. At least there is some kind of relationship.

New Ssangyong SUV will launch here very soon. The SUV will be built in Yizhen city, Jiangsu province where Saic-Huizhong MB100 van are producing there.

Rexton will be the first model...
