I am envisioning the Slavuta Nova as kind of a modern Daewoo Kalos -- the hatchback also resembles it somewhat -- and ZAZ has been making cars of the Lanos/Kalos type for quite some time now. It is the existence/availability of a ready-made, yet brand-new, model (whose development costs were already borne by Chery) that has perhaps ignited the interest of ZAZ.

I speculate a few more possibilities, like the G2 also becoming an MVM in Iran, and (why not?) even turning up as a future Cowin model in the home country (like the E1/E2 which were on the verge of being launched as a Chery, then going through a long gestation period, finally showing up as the C3R/C3).

There is no reason to believe ZAZ has "bought" the design from Chery; they could have merely licensed it from whoever owned the IP, most likely Chery itself. Also, there could have been clauses in the agreement with Guangqi (if at all there was one) that if Guangqi didn't proceed with the project within a stipulated time (say, two years), Chery could offer it to someone else (i.e, an "option" with 'first refusal' rights).

State of affairs at ZAZ today

An article on the current situation at ZAZ: http://www.autoconsulting.com.ua/article.php?sid=39933

Production of Forza has been suspended for quite some time; no great hopes for the Slavuta Nova which remains stillborn. Only sedan and cargo van versions of the Sens/Lanos and Vida are being made, that too only a few hundred this year, apart from some buses, cargo trailers and farm tractors. Interestingly, significant revenue comes from export of CKD kits to GM Egypt (Chevrolet Lanos and Aveo).
