China's SAIC budgets $105 mln for developing own brand

April 1, 2008 - Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp (SAIC) has decided to budget RMB 7.35 billion ($104.8) for developing own brand vehicles, a sum that represents almost half of the total volume of its current investment project, Beijing Morning Post reported today.

SAIC is reported to invest a total of RMB 15.3 billion to boost its current research and development capacities. By pouring 50 percent of the total investment into developing its own brand models including its own version of the Rover 75 (called Roewe) and newly acquired MG, the company aims to gain larger share in mid-end market segment.

Another RMB 2 billion will be used to refurbish its technical center in Shanghai to enhance its own R&D abilities.

SAIC posted a net profit RMB 4.63 billion for the whole year of 2007, up 242% over the previous year. The total revenue last year reached RMB 104 billion, a growth of 434% year on year.

In 2007, the automaker sold 1.69 million vehicles in the Chinese market, up 25.8% over 2006, and 1.13 million of them were passenger vehicles, an increase of 24.3% year on year. The sales volume makes SAIC the leading automaker in China in terms of sales.

SAIC's 'phoenix' car ready to take flight.

Shanghai displayed the body of the city's first self-made luxury sports car yesterday at an international auto exhibition, a newspaper reported today.

The concept car is called Fengyi, meaning Phoenix's glory. The design embodies a phoenix about to take flight, Oriental Morning Post said.

The blue and red car has two headlights like the "eyes of a phoenix," the report added.

Designers also used tai-chi elements in the car, said Yan Lixing, one of its designers. Fengyi has a flexible body that is strong, reflecting the tai-chi belief of combining force and flexibility, Yan added.

The report said the sports car has attracted a lot of attention at Auto Components Shanghai 2008.

The sports car was designed and built by Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation with an investment of more than 6 million yuan (US$857,142). The auto maker began to design the vehicle in October, the report said.

SAIC to export self-branded cars to Europe

Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (Group) (SAIC), which now has self-developed car brands like MG and Roewe, is confident to tap into the European market with the proprietary brands.

The Shanghai-headquartered car group, which has integrated its Nanjing-based peer Nanjing Automobile (Group) Corporation for over 100 days, has launched a series of self-developed car models like three-compartment sedan models Roewe750, Roewe550 and MG7, sports car model MG TF and two-compartment sedan model MG 3SW.

The MG brand cars have resumed production in the Long Bridge factory in the UK and are expected to enter the European market. MG TF is scheduled to resume production in the UK this August and to hit the local market in September.

The MG and Roewe brands cars will be sold around the world in two networks but share the same after-sale and maintenance services. About 30,000 MG cars are expected to be sold in China and the oversea markets this year.
