Forced to, having let MGR's talent slip through their fingers?

Suspect the references to the 45 are erroneous. 25, surely?

SAIC set to acquire global automotive consultancy Ricardo 2010

Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, the Chinese group with rights to the Rover 45 and 75, is expected to take over a West Midlands-based technological joint venture operation. Ricardo, the global automotive consultancy which runs the joint venture at its drive-train site at Leamington Spa, said yesterday that SAIC is expected to exercise an option to acquire the operation, called Ricardo 2010, before June 2007 for a nominal £1.

The research and development centre was set up as a wholly-owned Ricardo subsidiary employing about 150 mainly ex-MG Rover engineers in May 2005 to work on new cars for SAIC.

They are working mainly on a development of the 45, which essentially will be a new car designed and built to European standards. There are no indications yet where or when the new car will be launched or under what name.

Ricardo derives income by charged 2010 fees for managing and administering the R&D centre plus a service charge. Ricardo said in a note to its annual financial results statement yesterday that SAIC will keep the operation at Leamington and buy in administrative services from Ricardo.

The Sussex-based group yesterday reported underlying profits before tax for the year to June 30 of £14.5 million, an increase of 26 per cent over the previous 12 months. That figure excludes an exceptional payment of £3.7 million into the group's pension fund.

Turnover last year rose by nine per cent to £173 million.

Ricardo, which works closely with most of the world's major carmakers and Tier One components suppliers, said that despite the "continued challenges" facing the industry, its order book grew year on year to £72.2 million from £69.7 million and that it has a "strong pipeline of prospects".

The company's flagship projects include work on the world speed record-beating diesel-powered JCB vehicle and transmission systems for supercars such as the Ford GT and the Bugatti Veyron.

It is also working on clutch components for the MacLaren Formula One car.
Chief executive Dave Shemmans said: "I am very pleased with this set of results that again show stronger revenues and growth in profits.

"Our Leamington operation is absolutely buzzing and is going from strength to strength."

V6 Saga: From Rover to Roewe, With Help From Ricardo

SHANGHAI, China — When Shanghai Auto bought a package of intellectual property from Britain's defunct MG Rover group, it also acquired the rights to the automaker's aging KV6 engine.

But the V6 that sits under the hood of SAIC's recently introduced Roewe 750 sedan, while sharing the basic architecture of the old KV6, is a much more modern power plant, thanks to engineering assistance from Ricardo.

The British engineering firm has worked with a number of Chinese manufacturers, including Chery and Lifan, as well as SAIC. Ricardo was commissioned specifically by SAIC to re-engineer the KV6 and assist in setting up the new Baoshan engine manufacturing plant near Shanghai.

As modified by Ricardo for the Roewe 750 sedan, the updated 2.5-liter KV6 is fitted with a Siemens engine management system and meets Euro IV emissions standards. The engine makes 188 horsepower and is mated to an Aisin five-speed automatic transmission. The near-luxury sedan is capable of 0-60 acceleration in 10.2 seconds.

Ricardo continues to work with the Chinese auto giant on the development of SAIC's in-house automotive R&D capability for future products.

Next Phase in Ricardo Collaboration With SAIC

VAN BUREN TWP., Mich., Jan. 23, 2007 -- Following a highly successful twenty month period of development by Ricardo 2010 Consultants Ltd (a Ricardo subsidiary set up solely for this purpose), both of new products for SAIC Motor Company as well as of a world-class engineering organisation, SAIC is now ready to take ownership of this venture as planned and has advised Ricardo of its intention to do so over the coming months.
The Ricardo subsidiary Ricardo 2010 Consultants Ltd was formed in 2005 to act as the overseas engineering centre of SAIC Motor that would assist SAIC Motor in the development of its own in-house new product R&D capability. It was intended from the start that if Ricardo 2010 was successful in this task, it was would be transferred at a nominal sum of 1 pound Sterling to the Chinese group as a going concern after a period of time. Through its links with the wider Ricardo group it has enjoyed ready-made access to advanced automotive technology and state-of-the-art design, test and development facilities.
The period since the formation of Ricardo 2010 has been enormously successful both for Ricardo plc and for SAIC Motor Co Ltd, and has included the launch of the first vehicles under the new Roewe brand, the recently announced start of manufacture of the KV6 engine in China, and the ongoing development of a completely new family of Roewe brand products. The transferred business will continue both to be based at offices at the Ricardo Midlands Technical and have strong operational links with Ricardo UK Ltd.

The transfer of ownership of Ricardo 2010 Consultants Ltd will have no commercial impact for Ricardo plc in the financial year ending June 30, 2007.
