Skoda's output in China to reach 35,000 units in 2007 -- CBW
Prague, Jan 22 (CTK) - Czech car maker Skoda Auto expects to produce more than 35,000 units in China this year, Skoda spokesman Roman Meliska has told Czech Business Weekly (CBW).
Production of the Octavia model, on which Skoda wants to cooperate with Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Company (SVW), should start in the first quarter of this year. The new Octavias will be launched on the market in the second quarter of 2007.
Skoda will produce the cars in an existing SVW plant, and obtain 80 percent of the parts from producers in China, Meliska told CBW.
Skoda plans to produce two other models - the super-economy Fabia and luxury model Superb - in China.
"Production will reach 100,000 units within three years after adding the Fabia and Superb models," Meliska said.
SVW was established in 1985. It is a joint venture of Skoda Auto, Skoda's parent Volkswagen from Germany and China's Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation.
At the beginning of this year, SVW became Skoda's sole representative in China, taking over import rights, marketing and a network of around 70 dealers handling sales and after-sale services.
By 2010, Skoda would like to have a 2 percent share of the Chinese market and sell around 100,000 cars a year, board of directors member Fred Kappler said at a motor show held in Shanghai in November last year.
In 2005, Skoda's sales in China amounted to 1,196 units.
