Shanghai Volkswagen Press Release June 1 2006

POLO Jin Qu and Jin Qing -- two newly developed POLO products -- rolled-off the Shanghai Volkswagen line for the first time several days ago.

The POLO cars, characterized by their synchronized development and launch worldwide, debuted in China four years ago. The newly improved POLO models are also the fruit of a collaborative effort by German and Chinese designers and Engineers.

POLO Jin Qu and Jin Qing exemplify VWAGs cutting-edge styling concerns and also account for the taste of Chinese customers. Not only have they been facelifted, they have also retained the elaborate workmanship and safety performance unique to the brand. The development of the two cars demonstrates a leap forward for SVWs independent car development capacity. The cars will also garner positive attention for SVW in the domestic auto market, noted Mr. Chen Zhixin, Managing Director of SVW.

The Chinese names, "Jin Qing" and "Jing Qu" do not adequately describe the appealing style and dynamic performance of the car. The car names will also win favour and affection among customers for their connotation, "Jin Qing" associated with youth and "Jing Qu" is associated with professionalism.

SVW has targeted two market segments separately for the new products, based on distinctive contour, style and product features. Jin Qing, POLOs hatchback version, is oriented towards the private car market, as more of an impulse buy, while Jin Qu, the notchback POLO model, is aimed at more practical young urban consumers. With the roll-off of the two new POLO cars, SVW has moved further into the A0- or even the A-class car markets.

Shanghai Volkswagen Press Release June 11 2006

On the night of June 9, at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai Peoples Park (Moca, Shanghai), a stirring audio-visual feast was staged to mark the public debut of Shanghai Volkswagens brand new cars--POLO Jin Qing (Dynamic Passion) and Polo Jin Qu (Dynamic Aspiration). Lights, reflections, acoustics, visions and colors are harmonized to bring experiences of dynamic, passion and aspiration" that are inspired by the new cars POLO Jin Qing & Jin Qu.

In the night, the June air in the Peoples Park was full of vivacity. Lights showing SVW logo flickered on and off on the buildings and in the park, and the MOCA enclosed with dark fences was shrouded in a mist of mystery with large crowds of people around. There a white cubic object attracted the eye of spectators. Beyond it indistinctly appeared two dancing figures in front of POLO vehicles, distinct now and indistinct the next moment.

The nightly activities were held at the West restaurant on the third floor, and celebrities from the fashion circles and representatives from SVW made their presence. Everything around reflected the theme of the event: dynamic passion, dynamic aspiration and fashionable trend. After a short opening speech, the guests started to enjoy the dinner of Continental flavor and Asian elements prepared by the Moca chef Mr. Macro Shen. Every dish and dessert embodies the fashion element of Polo Jin Qing & Jin Qu to a nicety. The Latin performance illustrating the dynamic passion and dynamic aspiration as shown in the form of Polo cars drove the night feast to a grand visual banquet. Amid the colors of red, yellow, space silver and icy ocean blue of the new Polo cars, people cheered and laughed, intoxicated with joy in the multicolored world.

The cocktail concocting competition in the name of Polo Jin Qing & Jin Qu led the night gathering to a climax. All of a sudden, the different colors of the two vehicle versions appeared on the screen, and the guests were all eager to have a try. Soon enough, one cup of cocktail after another in all the colors of Polo Jin Qing & Jin Qu were presented before the eyes of audience, once again reminding them of the inherent features of the new Polo. The competition was highly appealing to them, as the winners of competition were entitled to a 3-month free drive of Polo Jin Qing & Jin Qu.

The concluding highlight of the night party was a perfect bridge appearing in the form of well-renowned models that served to link Polo Jin Qing & Jin Qu with fashionable trend. Set off by the lights, the models seated themselves one by one in the car to experience the comfort of driving, when the scenes looked as if they were gorgeous fashion pictures of all hues and colors. To me, cars are not merely a means of transportation. They can also reflect peoples individuality. The newly launched Polo Jin Qing & Jin Qu advocate a brand philosophy that is similar to the way of life which I am always in pursuit of. The exterior styling of Polo Jin Qing, in particular, combines the trendiness with passion so perfectly that it creates a style which is both free and dynamic, and is very popular with young people like me, said miss Zhou Jin, a famous model, when she told the emcee about how she felt about her Polo driving.

During the party, Dr. Woellenstein, deputy sales and marketing director of SVW, made presentation about the features of POLO Jin Qing & Jin Qu to all guests. As he introduced, POLO Jin Qing & Jin Qu are two masterpieces of collaborative efforts by the Chinese designers and their German counterparts. Besides the fine tradition of fine workmanship and safety performance, the POLO Jin Qing series are added with more touch of rigidity and passion, illustrating on the redesigned U-shape front end, for example. And POLO Jin Qu, as an innovative car faithful to VWs new brand design philosophy, is featured by the sporty streamline and bold contour, aiming at the young Chinese elite.

The event ended with a DJ performance in an easy and relaxed atmosphere. The guests were still reluctant to leave the scene, recollecting the pleasant flavor of the lingering multi-experience and emotions that POLO Jin Qing & Jin Qu evoked.

Let's hope that VW did their homework this time, i.e. a thoroughgoing market survey, and that these models will fly in China. At this point with only photos to judge by, I'm more impressed with the interior than the exterior.

It's mind boggling to think that as recent as 2001 VW had more than 50% of the China market and then let it slip away.

The Santana, which I believe was on the same platform as the ancient Audi Fox, fit the bill for awhile but couldn't cut it when the competition heated up.

I just hope that VW doesn't make the same mistakes in China that it made in the US, and let their hard-earned market position slip through their fingers and into the hands of the Japanese and others.

pre-Jetta/Golf

m14 I was referring to the pre-Jetta/Golf days, when VW was the best selling import in America. That is until 1975 when Toyota put them in the rear view mirror. In 76 Nissan did the same.

Back then it was carbureted Dashers and Rabbits that just didn't do it for Americans the way the Japanese imports did. Moreover there were no VW pickup trucks to compete with the Japanese pickups which were later to evolve into smashingly successful SUVs.

It will be interesting to see how Great Wall and Zhongxing do in that pickup market when they finally take the plunge. As for SUV's they will be hard sell by that time.

I spend too much time in china and not enough outside so have to ask the question.

Are the New SVW Passat, as well as these new polos, basically composites of the previous models but facelifted by using the front and rear styling from the latest VW overseas versions?

Certainly the front and rear of the new passat look like the ads I see for the new car on international tv, but the side panels look the same as the old one whereas the tv ads appear to depict a different car?
The Passat Lingyu still uses the LWB B5 platform from 1997, LWB platform came late 1999.

The Passat sold outside China the (B6) uses componentry from the Golf Mk5 it is entirely different than the Passat Lingyu.

FAW-VW is going to build Mk5 Golf and Passat B6 soon.

here is the Passat history http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Passat

The European spec Polo hatchback is exactly the same as the Jingqing.

The Polo Classic (Sedan) differs to the Jingqu, the Jingqu has a painted V grill, rear tail lights & chrome strip above where licence plate sits.

BTW dragin you're correct with the Audi Fox/Passat remark.

I think that is is a great redesign.

In Brazil there's some speculation about this new rear design, that could also be adopted in the brazilian Polo Sedan.

The rear lights of the sedan are based in the same concept of the recently reselased chinese Bora A4... the Phaeton.

VW do Brasil launches the New Polo Range with Chinese Influence

Volkswagen of Brazil released the New Polo and Polo Sedan. The hatch and the sedán are just like the german restyling launched in Germany in 2005 (in the Sedan, VW used the chinese restyling), with the double headlights ina single unit, front bumper with the "V" form; and new rear lights. At the interior the mods will be the colors and the new cloths. The engines stay the same: 1.6 liter flexible (petrol and alcohol with 103 cv) and a 2.0 liter petrol with 116 cv.
