How are we supposed to pronounce Chery? I've come up with 3 possibilities...

• Cherry, but there's a Datsun by that name
• Sherry
• Cherie (in a French accent)

Any other suggestions? (apart from "Crap" or "Rip-off" from the Chery-bashers)

It should be pronounced in the same way as cheery,which is a pun employed by this Chinese auto company to coincide with both the phonetic part and connotational means of its orginal name in Chinese (“奇瑞”, which literally means wonder and auspice, is pronounced as [ʈʂʰi rei]).

I've heard............

From some of my closest friends here (music teachers who are also car buffs), I've been told that the pronouncation should be something like "chee-ray". I've said it this way and most chinese seem to understand what I am talking about. It was NOT, repeat NOT a lame attempt to copy "chevy"!! When pronounced properly, "chee-ray" DOES tranlslate (kind of) to the word "cheery" in the english language.

So, I suupose with the BIG increase in sales for 2006, Chery is indeed a "cheery" company!!

Even though probably wrong, I just call it Chery, with teh same pronunciation as the Cherry fruit. My colleagues, friends etc in the biz do too.

I don't think anyone had any thoughts about marketing advantages when Chery chose that name. But rather in the Chinese cultural tradition they favored a name that embodied good luck.
The name in Chinese is as Erudite li said, 奇 瑞 and the pinyin spelling is
"Qi rui" which the company realized would never fly in the global marketplace.

For those of us who lean on translation aids to read Chinese we find that it's often translated "Wonderful Swiss" because the second character is the one used for the word Switzerland or 瑞士 (Ruishi in the pinyin spelling).

Interstingly 奇迹 qiji means miracle, and 奇怪 qiguai means strange

In twenty years I think the company will still be referred to as Chery and pronounced like the cherry fruit, by English speaking folks at least.
