Gonow, FAW, Great Wall, Zhongxing, Brilliance Jinbei, BAW, Dongfeng, Shuguang Huanghai, Xinkai, Baoding Dadi, Baoding Tianma, Changfeng Yangzi, Beiqi Foton, Chengdu Yema, Huaxiang Fuqi, Zhongke Huabei, Tianma, Foshan Nanhai Fudi, Zhongshun, Jincheng, Qingyuan Bende, Polarsun, Tianqi Meiya, Xingtai Hongxing, Wuzheng, Zhongneng.

They all produce either an SUV, or a pickup, based on the body shell designs seen here. The bodies come in either a short (2760mm), or long (3025mm), wheelbase version, and were the product of Hong Kong Polytechnic Univerisity's school of design. It is a very economical design derived from Isuzu patents.

For brand purposes, each of the above companies has designed a distinctive body front section to mate with the body shell. They are usually sourced locally and include unique headlamps, grille, bumper, fog lamps etc..These front section designs show great imagination and as a result some observers have compared the appearance of these various models to Toyota, Ford, Nissan, and Chevrolet.

A search under "SUV" or "pickup" here at CCF, will display a wide array of examples. Power for most models is usually a version of the popular four cylinder 491Q engine (a Toyota 4Y design) or the Mitsubishi 4G64.

As far as I know there has been no C-NCAP testing of these models to date.

Despite the abundance of these models, they probably account for less than 20 per cent of the SUV and pickup markets. But the price is affordable and so they remain popular, while often giving local governments a chance to skim off some of the growing industry profits.

We might ask the question: Will the staying power of this basic SUV and pickup be able to withstand the continuing rise in the price of fuel?

Martin as far as I know, Fudi supplies the shells to the following:

FAW, Dongfeng, Beiqi Foton, Great Wall, Changfeng, Brilliance Jinbei, Gonow, Zhongxing, Shuguang, and possibly Wuzheng.

The other automakers may have their own dies on site. Perhaps someone else can add to this.
